And yet I was still 8:40 off the winner and 5:30 off challenging for GB selection so need to be at least 10% quicker! Lots of work to be done over this winter. I still need to do the analysis of how many V35 runners were ahead of me as I'm racing the V35 category in the World Masters Mountain Running champs on 12th Sept, so it'll be useful info for benchmarking (I'm 39).
I find it scary sometimes where I finsh and think, I don't think I can give anymore but im still 4-6mins off the leader..! A lot of training ahead for me also!
Just had a look at the masters mountain course in Wales is it? Ooft no chance you'd get me doing anything like that yet but I doff my cap to you sir, that is exceptional running going into that!!
Hope it goes well!! thumbup

Thanks. My main reason for doing the GB trial last weekend was for recce purposes for the world masters (and dipping my toe into the mountain running world). Different course, but same hillside. Hoping to recce the actual course on the Friday (11th Sept) the day before the race as long as I can get there early enough.

The Masters course is a bit easier than the GB Trial course thankfully! hehe

Is "Mountain Running" much different to the traditional UK "Fell Running"?

Not really. Same sort of stuff, but tends to be properly marked courses rather than local knowledge being an advantage. Ties in with the European Mountain Running races in that way. Proper fell runners generally consider the mountain running courses a bit soft although the same runners are at the top.

Top running this weekend by the sounds of things. I managed to finally get out on Sunday avo for an 18km long run. With nine weeks until my marathon, it's suddently quite a distance jump!

I'm also interested in the taper time. I was planning on racing, and had set a three week taper, but now I'm just getting round. Worth cutting the taper to two weeks to give a slower build up in LSD?
Tapering is quite an individual thing I have discovered, I ran two marathons, for the first (Beachy Head) I definitely did one long run too many, for London six months later I was about right.

I would say, two week taper, so around 10 miles run with 14 days to go, then some short maintenance runs, a quickish pace but may be only 4 or 5 miles - three or four times in the those 14 days.

I ran the day before both marathons, but just a slowish 5k just to keep my legs ticking over - other runners I spoke to were horrified by this idea.... however I know if I lay off for four days I am slow to start.

I could really do with some advice for some running shoes if anyone would be so kind?

I started running about 8 months ago, I’m pretty heavy and running has helped me lose a lot of weight so far but still a long way to go. I went to get my current running shoes from sweatshop and had my gait analysed etc and so far haven’t picked up any injuries. I have recently entered a trail half marathon in November and I’m a bit concerned that my road biased running shoes won’t cut it. Are there any trail shoes specifically for over pronators? I read somewhere that it’s not as important off-road but a lot of the trails I run on at the minute are still pretty hard packed mud and stones. I feel like I should invest in a pair of trail shoes so I don’t look like bambi running through the mud but at the same time I don’t want to pick up an injury.

If anyone has any trail running experience it would be great to hear what you think

I believe that trail shoes are pretty much 'support' type shoes which is why you don't get the variation of types compared to the road version.

I see there's a Pistonheads cycling group on Strava, anyone fancy a running one?

Did my first-ever split long run yesterday and I'm suffering this morning.

Did 13.5 miles in the pouring rain running to work, worked 7 hours then ran 10 miles home in the blazing sunshine.

Quads are really stiff and it hurts when I sit down or stand up frown
Was that a distance that you were used to?

Would you do it again?

I'm contemplating a 9 mile each way run commute, although I may do a train in/run home first. 9 miles would be fine, but 2x9 might be pushing it a bit.

I made one: https://www.strava.com/clubs/pistonheads-running

The name/logo can be changed as neither are very imaginative smile

I think I'll get more training in first hehe

I was pleased as I ran 5k this evening on a mixture of road and cross country and didn't feel like dying when I got back!

Miles are right down at the minute though due to knackered groin but it will be interesting to see what other PH members get up to!.

I actually think i have Gilmores groin and had an appointment with a specialist on thursady gone. He says I must try a few months of physio before surgery is considered. I am not convinced it will work but I suppose i must try! I won't even consider running more than about 10k though at the minute because once my legs get tired i am in agony with my groin.

A fell run in the Yorkshire Dales for me this morning. I've been spoiled by good conditions of late, so it was good to do a 'proper' one today in thick cloud, wind at the summits, with thigh deep bogs and sketchy way-finding.

It was only 12k, but felt like much, much further. The good news was that my quads only felt to be on fire for a couple of minutes on the first rocky descent -things are improving!
