I cant help being tempted by the high miles 145 Cloverleaf in the classifieds www.pistonheads.com/sales/155443.htm . Is it a really bad idea? I dont see many over 100k for sale to be honest, but is that because the whole car doesnt make it as opposed to the engine?

What else should I look for IF I did go and view/drive it?

Cheers, Greg.

He's saying the Variator has gone and it doesn't affect performance. Well it does - it's lost the variable cam timing now.

Unit is about £80 to replace, but the same process as replacing the cambelt so it's the labour that costs.

Despite that, it looks a smart car in black and it's not too expensive. Especially if you could get it for £700...

Had a 145 Cloverleaf which had covered something like 160K and it was fine, engine was sweet as a nut. Had a file with £10K worth of bills for various things that had been done to it since new though. I'm slightly suspicious of one that has had the variator go, (thinking it probably should have been replaced before it went), but for the money, sounds a cracking car.

Worth checking when the belts were done; the original service book says 72K, but on the 147 and 156 that was reduced to 36K due to loads of early failures.

The ad says the belts won't need doing for 35K, and yet the variator is on its way out, so either

1) The variator has started playing up in the last 1K miles,
2) The cambelt was changed in the last 1K miles but for some reason the dodgy variator wasn't replaced
3) The cambelt was last changed 37K miles ago, so its got 35K left on the original interval, but is overdue for the revised interval.... in which case check the price at a specialist and bargain accordingly.

Also, 120K is the second spark plug service. 8 of them, platinum tipped at between £7 and £20 depending on where you get them.

Have a good check of the radiator (they are prone to losing fins behind the fan), and make sure it doesn't overheat at all. Mine was fine through winter, but come summer I was getting 90C+ even at 50mph

Those are the main things I can think of, if its been looked after 124K should be no problem, mine was still pulling like a train when I sold it at 117K.

Thanks for all the replies.

I am still interested but I'm going to see what else the weekend brings. I do really like 145 Cloverleafs anyway, so maybe it's worth me waiting for one 100% mint.

Cheers,Greg.
