Does anybody know of a decent upgrade from the LUCAS 17/18 ACR.

Glyn

Lucas do a high power output one and there is Bosch one that many people use. I had a Bosch one fitted but it dies after about 3 years and I then fitted the Lucas high power one.

Remember to upgrade the wiring if you are thinking or running higher power headlamps and put some realys in so that all that power doesn't go through the cabin switches!

Talk to Bannister/Venny/sTeVeR and see what the current recommended flavours are

You don't know what the output of the Better Lucas do you? I have a 18acr and it only pumping around 34amps and can't be bothered to strip it!

55 Amp

I ran 100/90 bulbs in the headlamps, meant you could drive really fast at night because you could see! But they drew 17amps on Main Beam!

Its possible that my old engine is still kicking since I believe the car was written off. I'd talk to sTeVeR and see if he knows of its whearabouts?

It also had a full Tony Law exhaust system on it (copy of GAjon's), which might suit your car!!!

Get one of those exhausts fitted, I reckoned it added about 25bhp in the midrange on my car and you'll need it anyway when you go triple-Webber (or triple throttle bodies). And it makes a good noise!

After it was fitted to my car, between 30-90mph my Taimar would out accelerate my 235bhp Impreza Turbo (in a straight line)

Is that enough plugging Adrian!

Adrian,
If you fit my rear discs (ain't got the time-flat out!) I'll have an exhaust as well!

Now I'm interested
Was that a standard 3000M/Taimar with just a set of tubular manifolds on it?

Not quite standard.

Fully balanced Bottom End with Powermax 10.1:1 compression pistons
Ported Head with Bigger Valves
Kent Fast Road/Race Camshaft
Weber 40DFI Carb with custom one off K&N filter

But the exhaust relly let it breathe

But for real 'Essex' power you need GAjon's engine, I'll let him explain!

That's a fairly "hefty" spec.

My current pipe dream is to rebuild an essex to a good solid standard, but modify it for injection, of course with injection and spark controlled by megasquirt.

In that dream I then slap an Eaton M90 super charger on it (running a modest 6psi) hehe

I happen to have one in my attic (as you do) and I also have a spare Essex V6 lying in the corner of my garage, now if only I had about 1000 spare hours and a clue what I'm doing...
