Damp/musty insides

Folks,
The interior of the Kinkmobile has been misting up over the past few days and the inside smells slightly musty/damp.
I've also got some papers in the glovebox which are a bit damp (only slightly - but noticeably so).
The carpets are dry and there's no leaks within the cabin itself. I'm going to check the 2 drainholes under the hood and run a soft flexible wire down it to clear it.
Is there anywhere else or anything else I should check?

my eunos has been continually leaking from the side windows and it seemed like the seals were storing water. so i took them off the rail they sit on and reseated them. that seems to have cured the problem. no water in the cabin at all whereas before both the seats would get drenched. (or it is possible that it was because i parked it the other way around on the hill last night (ie point up rather than down
) i will have to do more investigation

If i park my car pointing nose up I get a wet seat. If I park pointing nose down its bone dry. Doesn't take much of a slope either...
Actually - at home I do park on a gradient, with the nose up (so to speak). Whereas at work it's level, but under cover.
I noticed yesterday a pool of water under the car, coming from somewhere behind the drivers seat, so I assume this is from the hood drainhole on the drivers side.
I'll have a good poke about this weekend and hope I don't have 4 inches of water in a well somwhere, in the car, like I had with the TiV, with a load of relays sitting in it

Although my eunos is bone dry (unless i drive top down in the rain!!!!) i have found a way to stop the misting up and damp smell inside the car which was there when i bought it. When you buy new shoes/trainers, keep the little packets of silica gel that you get in the box (small white packet, dodgy eplanation) when you have three or four, position them around the cab. I have two stuck on back of my seats and two on the shelf. This seems to virtually eliminate any inside condensation.........

that is a good plan.
you can buy them in bulk from somewhere as carpet moisture absorbers (atleast i think you can as my mum has loads around our house)
Bugger - Only a week ago or so I chucked away a load of those silica gel packs!

Well - I had a suprise this morning .......
The windows were all wet (on the outside), so I thought I would get my rag out of the boot and give them a wipe.
Imagine my suprise when I opened the boot to find that it was totally saturated inside. Fortunately the battery was OK and the earthing points, etc. So, now that makes me think that one (or both) of the drain holes from the hood IS blocked. So that will be getting a thorough (but gentle) poking this weekend.
Upon further investigation, armed with this new found knowledge, I checked behind the seats, which was dry. But at the base of seat was all damp - a spot I'd not checked before.
Bugger.

the left boot drain hole on my car was very blocked too. it is tricky to see the drain hole from the inside as it is hidden behind the fuel overfill pipe. if you look underneath you will see a bulge in the seam similar to the sill drain holes. poke that.
it seems to me like there are loads of 5s going around with owners who really dont carry out very basic maintenance on their cars. clearing all the drain holes is a 5 minute job once a month but is so important for keeping the car dry, yet it doesnt seem to have been done on most of the cars being bought on here!

Chris - what other activities would you recommend, specific or unique to the 5.
I do everything else as a matter of course weekly: oil, tyres, etc.
And now that I'm armed with the workshop manual I can get cracking on all the additional stuff (and more besides)
ETA: I suppose we could make this into a "top tips" for owners

i wouldnt ask me that, ive only had my car about 2 weeks longer than you have had yours!!!
as far as i have found out the things that should be checked regularly would include:
fluids checks
tyre checks
clearing all the drains - hood, 4 sill either side, boot (any others?)
checking hood for leaks and adjustment
and i cant think of much more.

I think that the rain rail is worth investigating. I had a similar problem with the musty smell in the cabin and steaming up, but no pools of water. The boot, however, was a different proposition.
Anyway, when I had the hood replaced a few weeks ago the rain rail was completely rotted and had to be changed to. End of problem.
Oh, and a simple bit of maintenance is to make sure that all door/roof rubbers have your own choice of gunk on them to keep them soft and seal against the glass/metal.

For boot dampness what batterys have you chaps got ? i had a halfords job in mine , and the doot was damp enough to float a boat , fitted a gelmatt battery from mx5 parts and the vent tubes and its been bone dry since . must check all my drainage points , but i unlock the car , get in and end up heading for the nearest roundabout , the fun factor of the car still hasnt worn off , love it as much as the day i picked it up
