Finally made the decision that the 997C2S is going in September (coincide with bonus). Its a stunning car and hasn't put a foot wrong but just fancy trying something different for a while - had a 911 now for just over two years.

Assuming I can get ~£50k for my 997C2S I'll be looking at a budget of about £75-85k cash to spend. Car will have to be a daily commuter through London, be an only car but also enough power/handling for the occassional hooligan hoon. Don't need rear seats.

Can't decide but shortlist thus far:

- 996TT X50 - Obvious choice but do I want another Porsche?
- AM V8 - Wife's favourite and probably front runner at the moment.
- SL55 AMG - Somehow like the idea of a big V8 merc but are they too gay (Dale Winton has one...)?
- BMW M6 - Huge power but ugly and a depreciation black hole?
- Ferrari 360 - Always wanted a Ferrari but is it a realistic daily driver?
- Maserati 4200 - Love the looks but is it an older man's car?

Had two M3s before my 911s so not keen on another one. Maybe I could stretch the budget and go for an early Lambo Gallardo or even an Audi R8 (if I could source one).

This is difficult..!! Any opinions?

Cheers.

Driven all of the above bar Maser, personally would go for AMV8 although Merc/M6 would be better for the commute due to no clutch pedal... 360 I am not sure i aould rely on daily. 996 turbo i think you would find the interior very dated after 997. Can't comment on Lambo or R8 but what about adding a new Jag XKR to the list of contenders?

I have a 360- great sense of occasion and well built and comfy too. You could pick up a nice late one for mid 60s. If you can get to 80k then go with the Gallardo.

Or..how about the new Maserati Gransport..(gorgeous)

my 2 pence:

I think you will find it very hard to move away from Porsche ownership. If I had to choose I would consider a second hand GT3 (not on the list), a tidy 993 turbo (not on the list), or maybe a nearly new M6 with a slug of depreciation lobbed off.

Think you will find the AMV8 very temperamental after a year or two of faultless Porsche ownership.

The Gallardo is awesome if you can find a decent one at that price. Higher cost of ownership however.

What about a 997 convertible, same drive (ish), with a whole new ownership experience? You would have missed the summer though.

RS5 must be out about then also....

A CLS63AMG would be a nice way to experience the big merc thing without feeling too grown up.

If convenient, I would be tempted to keep the 997 and plough some disposable cash into joining one of the better car clubs...

997 GT3 with Comfort Pack -

More fun, performance than a C2S with hardly any compromise on comfort.

With that Budget - If you want some excitiement, smile on your face,German build quility,TT speed, prescence etc,etc then a used Gallardo E Gear would be perfect, friend of mine has one and it is really an everyday supercar in my opinion and comes with a sense of precense that 911s could only dream of. Only minus that i can think of are the servicing costs but if you are considering a 360 then the Gallardo i assume would be less if not on-par.

P.S.Aston Martins are a badly made 6 series in my eyes and if you want a grand tourer then the Bentley Continental is as good as it gets unless you can stretch to a used 612??

Thanks for the comments. Had two 997s already (Carrera and now Carrera S) so definitely not another one. Not sure I could live with a GT3 as a daily driver.

Love Porsches and will definitely have another but probably a nice 964 for the weekends together with a sensible family car. No kids etc yet so want to experience something else before having to get something sensible.

Think the AMV8 is looking a likely candidate but do fancy a Gallardo (if only Lambo's had extended warranties...)

Interesting point as my friends Gallardo is a 04 and it came with a years Warranty from Lamborghini Birmingham?

I have just traded out of a lovely V8 Vantage (currently for sale in Graypauls Notts I think) to go back into a C2S. I just could'nt use it every day as the electrics became hap hazard and the fuel costs are too high for 20K a yr miles. Now the 997S feels bulletproof by comparison and just as quick if not quicker.

However, it was a wonderful car to look back on when left in the car park or on the drive, when compared to the 997S's more mundane looks. And at least I can say I had one, but was it worth the costs? - probably not I'm afraid.

Gallardo - if you can afford the service/fuel costs it has to be favourite - just get a good warranty - a friend of mine had a bad one without a warranty and it will take him some years to pay his credit card off! Stu

Would suggest test driving a few of the cars. I did not like the build quality of the AMV8 and had a nagging doubt that it would not be that reliable. Would not buy a new one. Test drive a GT3, I think you would be very surprised. The PASM is awesome and makes the car very docile when you want it to be. It really is not a daunting car to drive unless you want it to be.

I am a member of one of the car clubs someone mentioned above. Great idea when you want to try a selection of the cars you mentioned without the ownership cost.

I always thought Lambos had two year warranties and then you were on your own with no chance of extending - the reason why there's so many for sale at just over the two year mark... hhmmm.. interesting and will have to find out. With a full manufacturer's warranty I'd be very tempted.

I think that this also troubles existing G owners - it's a shame!

Erik - The guys on the Lambo forum have confirmed in the past that you cannot get and extended warranty like with Porsche BUT my point was that my friends was a used 2004 (53 plate)Gallardo and it came with a Years warranty?? So it can be done i assume.

After 6 years with Porsche - Boxster S & 3 911's I am wondering about movign away but its hard - Porsche does everything so so well. My 996TT has been faultless in every way but I hanker after something a little more exotic, but know very well that overall whatever I change to I will have to compromise something in the process (reliability / build quality / speed / reasonable running costs)

My front runners are a Ferrari 360 &/or Gallardo (a real stretch to be honest)

The 360 is a bit slower, but the sound, the looks and the "event" of driving it probably make up for that, and lats face it, it aint exactly slow.
The Gallardo is lovely, but decent ones start at mid £80k's and thats a stretch (but I could do it) again they look lovely & performance wise easily a match of the 996TT.

But for both running costs would probably be a lot more (esp Gallardo - no extended warranty (which would scare me silly if I had one and probably spoil the ownership experience) & they would both be less reliable and not so great as a daily drive, so I have gone back to "what about another 911" thinking - perhaps a 996TT S or X50.....or keep mine, modify it, Tubi exhaust etc.

Nothing else really floats my boat at the moment. I remember a conversation with a chap at Lambo High Wycombe who said (with a smile) "bloody Porsches - they are THE most difficult cars to get owners out of" - and I guess he is right!

Exactly my situation. My 911s have not cost me a penny (not a single penny..) to run apart from fuel/insurance/tax and that's hard to beat. However, still want something a bit more 'special'. There is a part of me thinking that maybe I just spend anothe £10k on mine - maybe put a Techart aerokit/wheels or something on it to make it 'special' again. Would hate to move to something and regret it.

Actually maybe keeping the 997 and spending £10k on an ecurie (or similar) membership is the best compromise.

aargh..!! too difficult.

yes.

joining something like ecurie would help you decide on a potential porsche replacement without the potential mistake / expense of choosing a car you might not be happy with.

Ecurie have (or will have) most of the cars on your list.

+ others out of your price range today, but maybe not in 12 - 24 months (f430 etc)
