Worn through cable

So on my way to my exam yesterday and at the end of the road the car makes a bit of a bang and the car goes dead. Not far enough away to call the AA so push the car home. 
Looks like the cable that connects to the ECU/starter motor/alternator has rubbed its shielding off on an adjacent metal pipe and shorted everything out. She won't start, nothing from the fuel pump either but the stereo ad lights work still.
My friendly local mini garage has just put her on the trailer and carted her off for diagnosis. Boo...anyhoo thanks for listening, just needed to share with the internet
