A mention of Ultima on a Lotus forum, about the chassis of the Ultima. I'm just curious of the validity.
quote:
"Problem with Ultimas is that the chassis cannot handle the power they give them, or the grip that's possible with the huge tyres...
you only have to look at the attempts that have gone before, several people have tried to run them in GT, and by the time they have finnished, the cars are no longer ultimas.. (got a look at one from Brit GT, it was a ProSport in drag!).
take a look at the LOT times from Oulton, then stack them up against the times from GT and the like, remebering we (as in LOT) are on road control tyres..."
and another quote:
"History lesson, ProSport exsisted *before* Ultima
Stealth is based on a ProSport chassis
Ultima chassis is a complete joke in comparison (along with it;s uprights/brakes/etc)."
I assume he is comparing the Lotus chassis to the Ultima, does anyone here have some insight on the Lotus comparisons?

I have owned a lotus elise 190, and what can i say.....
It was the biggest piece of crap i have ever had the misfortune to own, the remarks are unfounded in my opinion!!!
Lotus owners are jealous as the only bit the ever see of an Ultima is the back of it moving quickly away from them. Lotus owners think also that because they have one they are the best sport cars on our roads, i think they are massively over rated. I only kept my Lotus for 2 months i hated it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I cant wait till the day i can own an Ultima GTR!!

When the day comes that the chassis is the limiting factor on my car I'll take these comments more seriously.Until then I'm content for my ability to be the lowest common denominator.I'll just pop over to the PH Prosport and Steatlh forums to see if they agree with all that........whoops, the don't seem to have a forum on the worlds best car nut chat room. Damn, I'll have to keep the Ultima.
Lucky
as i have mentioned here before when i was considering an exige obviously i was on seloc, when i mentioned i was ditching the exige idea in favour of an ultima all i can say is 85% of the posts were very harsh towards the ultima, now i am no expert but the S1 exige has an engine that was designed to be a 1.4 given a longer stroke to make it a 1.8 (which causes massive head gasket problems) oh amd it was designed to go in a metro

...... unlike all of the other cars in GT that look EXACTLY like cars in the shopping mall carparksI coulnt help myself.....I was looking around that site a week or so ago and saw that thread and resisted.... but this time I couldnt... I posted this:
We heard about this slagging match over on Pistonheads so I thought Id come over and add my 2 cents worth.
With 580HP of supercharged 6.0L LS2 I dont really care how "slow" my car goes around corners...... its so fast down the straight I can stop at the corner, get out of the car, take a leak, have a stroll around, push it around the corner, scratch my nuts and get back in before you guys get to the corner......

I have recently gone from GTR to Exige and am happy with that move. No point in getting carried away with which is better car, both are good, each to their own. Ability of Ultima of course will vary depending on how it is spec'd & build quality (some may argue it is same with Lotus).
I've done >3000 miles in Exige in 3 months. I did 7000 miles in Ultima in 3 years which maybe says something. Liked my Ultima, but found I just didn't have the time for the constant fettling that was required, and from the sounds of it my car was not unique in that respect.
Build quality aside, main difference is in the engine department of course. That little Japanese motor is totally reliable, untemperamental with naff soundtrack but reasonably interesting power from 6200 rpm up (must admit I am wondering about a supercharger though). Ultima was all monster grunt, niggly oil leaks, great soundtrack, constant need for care and attention (and oil).
Handling wise Lotus easier to deal with, I never had ability or confidence to push Ultima to limit on track whereas with Exige I feel much more at ease. In terms of absolute grip, depends on rubber - I don't think there is all that much between Ultima on F1s and Exige on A048s .

Prosport Ultimas are not made by the same 'Prosport' that are famous now ie the one that modify Subaru's. I think the Prosport in question stopped trading a few years back.
The Stealth is a completely diffrent chassis and yes it is a lot more advanced than an ultima, but then its a totaly different car (even if similar concept) so not even sure how relevant the comments are.
I wonder if the lad who entered his standard car into the series will make any comments..... he apparently raced his detuned ultima against elises etc and won the series so easily he was banned... I seem to remember him specifically mentioning how slow the Elises were in comparison even though they had more power.
How competative the Elise's in GT racing?
I have an Ultima and I think it is the best thing since battery powered tools ( I have never thought sliced bread was that much of a good thing ). I know a few Lotus owners that have said on various occasions, 'I would love to have an Ultima': I have never wanted to own a Lotus. I hired one for a few laps last year and yes, it was fun and handled well, but I came away thinking that if a little car with half an engine was that much fun to drive, I can't wait to get the Ultima round a track.
This is not really a fair argument as say Lotus v MGF might be but then again, all is fair in love and war I guess ( and inane argument on forums like SELOC and this one )

The comment about GT cars still stands, assides from any other cars out there, the last Ultima in NGT was not an Ultima chassis. Now, whichever way you cut it, there was a reason it was NOT an Ultima chassis, can you guess why?
as for your post on Seloc:

as I said there, would you like to prove this?Just for clarity, I have nothing against Ultimas per say, but the usual single marque forum bullshit seems strong in you, try pulling your head out of the sand sometime and see that there are other cars out there too....

errrr, am i missing something .......... i dont think i give a shit what lotus drivers think of my ultima. if they dont like em dont buy one is what i say. !!!!
And that's just fine

you really need to read *all* of the thread to uderstand the points made in the context...

Sorry?what you on about Subaru for? ProSport's were made for a race serise. They are visually very simmilar to an Ultima (share some of the bodywork etc etc).

Stealth is based on a ProSport with re-worked body and a huge V8 and transaxle - by Bob Lightandygtt said:

That would be Glyn Coxon? (nice guy)Only time I shared the same grid as him was at Snett (a POWER cct - 3rd June 2006), I put my Elise on Pole, and won that race outright.
I saw him at Silverstone shortly afterwards, he was struggling with bending wishbones (they seem to be made from monkey-metal).

Sore subject, Lotus have done shit in GT3, Privateers are doing better, but GT3 is not open to privateer cars.if you look further afield, there is an Exige in Aus GT currently 5th in the championship.

Scuffers, are you reffering to reading all of the Lotus thread. Obviously i have read all of the thread here(ultima). i just dont go with this slagging each others cars off. most of the sports cars in pistonheads have things going for them or against. how can an ultima be compared with an excige, it isnt the same class of car? i like the elises/exiges but i didnt want to buy one ahead of an ultima. i was attracted by the potential enjoyment of building and maintaining the thing with the added bonus of having a head turner with some serious performance to it. if the lotus guys are talking ultimate sports cars with ideal chassis and the like, then we and they are probably in the wrong car.
