S type no reverse gear
Discussion
My W reg (2000) 3.0 S type auto has just stopped going into reverse gear, all the other gears select and work perfectly, but once I select reverse it just refuses to move. For the past week it has been a bit slow to engage the gear and when it did engage it would do so with a bit of a clunk. Anyone got ideas as to what it could be.

Gavin,Thanks for the reply, I did post a few months ago re a 'GEARBOX FAULT' message. I got the dealer to read the codes which you then identified as solenoid faults, after changing the oil/filter and unplugging the wiring conectors and checking them it has not re-occured. Is the reverse solenoid part of the 'block' of solenoids inside the gearbox which I saw when I last took the sump off. Also do you know if they can be purchased separately from jaguar. thanks phil

Before you go changing the electronics you need to make sure that it isn't a hydraulic blockage either in the solenoids or the valve body. Sometimes debris gets into the exhaust port of the solenoids and causes them to not flow oil, but the electrical continuity is there.Anyway, check that out. If it des happen to be the solenoids then to answer your questions
1) yes it is part of that block of solenoids and
2) I'm pretty sure you need to buy the block.
