osr drum binding
Discussion
Despite the fact that my tuscan doesnt need an MOT until Sept, I ran it rhough one yesterday as I wanted it to act as a checkover for Le Mans next week. It failed on the rear drum binding. It has been sitting about for a few weeks, when I drove it afterwards it seemed to be fine!? How can I tell and what is the easiest method to rectify. I thought that just taking it for a spin may help. Should I look at other methods of rectifying?
The rear wheel cylinders should slide up and down in the backplate. The most common problem is they stick due to lack of use. Copper grease when assembling always helps but "gently" tapping the cylinder up and down to free it should do the trick followed by a trip to Le Mans to stop it recurring. If that doesn't work you will need to strip the rear drums off and invstigate further. sTeVeR
Obiwonkeyblokey,
I had the same happen to my 1600M during this years MOT. When the brakes were applied during the actual test, one drum locked up solid. The examiner told me that this happens when they have been stood up over the winter and advised peeling the rubber covers back slightly and administering a small squirt of WD40 and then work the pistons in and out carefully. This done everything freed off O.K. I will be doing this to all mine prior to taking it out for the first time every year from now on.
