my wipers now have a mind of their own. They still work but now if you press the button for single wipe or wash it just moves about 4 inches and stops, if you keep your finger on its OK, any suggestions?

Sounds like the parking switch contacts (located inside the wiper motor housing). They basically do the job of your finger on the button. The button starts the motor running thereby closing the contacts and providing power to the motor. When you release the button the contacts open and stop the motor when the wipers reach the park position (if you're lucky).

Looking at the motor and rack mechanism I reckon it's Rover in origin (eg old mini etc) but not 100% certain.

I have a very similar problem on mine. It transpires that I only have 'fast wipe' and nothing else, so mine is in the garage at the moment having that looked amongst a few other things

Sometimes in the morning my wipers only move about 4 inches until I hit about 60mph then they finish the sweep (I think it must be the airflow moving them).

they are fine once they are going and if I use them again at all that day they will be ok, until the next morning.

I wonder if I have a super stick windscreen..

Had the same problem with mine. Needed a new wiper parking switch. The part itself is cheap but it's a pig to get to and to replace - behind the wiper motor on the passenger side inside the engine bay.

My wipers are crap. New motor, new park switch, mega fast car with mega crap wipers. I suggest that you forget about the wipers and go to Halfords and by some stuff that comes in a pink penis sex aid container called Rain off or similar.
It is not a gimmick but fantastic stuff as the water just runs off like magic.

Mine has lasted for weeks. Dont need crap wipers anymore!!!!!!!
Just rub it all over your window glass, but hide the container or you could get arrested.
