I'm sure everyone has read the Darwin awards etc, but this was in the local paper last night. The level of stupidity is mind boggling!

"A PRISONER who tried to smuggle a mobile phone into a Suffolk prison by hiding it inside his bottom ended up in hospital after it broke apart inside him.
The unlucky burglar - reported to be Irishman Martin Mahoney, 32 -was taken from Highpoint Prison near Haverhill, to Addenbrooke's Hospital, Cambridge after being found in agony in his cell.
An operation to remove the device left him with 200 stitches and part of his bladder had to be removed.
Phones and drugs are often hidden in body cavities by prisoners and prison officers hope the incident will highlight the dangers of doing so.
A Prison Service spokesperson confirmed the incident had occurred, adding there were rigorous search systems in place for prisoners and visitors.
"Unfortunately, however, we are aware that there are occasional breaches in security and it is now well established that prisoners can and do secrete mobile phones in body cavities.""

Why is it mind bogglingly stupid?

This is the accepted way of smuggling loads of things.

Precisely what I was thinking. If my hands are full, its how I usually carry the newspaper downstairs in the morning...

I think the stupid part is trying it with something that comes apart and has sharp bits! not quite the same as stuffing an 1/8th in a condom!

That'll be nice when it comes to making a call with it.

"Here, mate, can I borrow your mobile a minute..."

To borrow a previously much-used phrase, "shi**y-buttons"

Why do you call it a 'cell phone'?
What does that mean?

From the Register:
http://www.theregister.co.uk/2007/06/20/phone_char...

"A lag at Swaleside Prison on the Isle of Sheppey was caught with an entire phone charger up his jacksie after officers noticed his "discomfort" during a search of his cell, The Sun reports.

The appropriately-named Tony Pile, 22, serving a life stretch for "beating a man to death in a race hate attack in 2005", was collared during a sweep aimed at cracking down on drug and phone smuggling into the Kent chokey.

Pile is on the establishment's "escape list" of prisoners likely to do a runner after he was found in possession of a mobile phone, but one Prison Service source admitted: "We've known for some time that prisoners hide phones up there but this is a first."

The source continued: "Pile had somehow managed to secrete the entire charger where the sun doesn't shine. It just goes to show the lengths some inmates will go to stay in touch with the outside world while banged up."

The sweep of Pile's cell also revealed two "fist-sized" blocks of cannabis and cocaine. The make of the phone charger is not noted."

not that i've tried sticking one up my rectum, how exactly did the phone 'break up' - the battery compartment is the only detachable bit?

of course if i were to hide one up my bum, i'd leave it in the plastic wrapper.
