Stags with hardtops
Discussion
I have been thinking about buying a Triumph Stag, but the one thing that is putting me off is that it will have to stand outside for a while. My theory is that the car should be watertight, particularly if the hardtop is in place.
Can any owner enlighten me as to how good the hardtop is at keeping water out of the car? I have ben bust rebuilding a Daimler Sovereign that has a webasto roof. That has been challenging (to say the least) to make watertight!!!
Any info greatfully received!

I'd try asking this over in the Club Triumph Stag forum (board open to non club members) - http://club.triumph.org.uk/forum/
My Mum had a stag which stayed outside all year round ...as i recall, the hard top is pretty effective at keeping the rain out.
As long as the rubber seals are ok you should be alright... (just don't aim a hose pipe directly at the gaps..the seal isn't THAT good )
As with any car of that sort of age, you can't gurantee that water won't get in somewhere else .. but if you use the car regularly, you'll be able to notice any dampness, and do something about it before it does any damage.

Jaguarnut, if you're interested I'll be selling a very tidy example for the right money soon, in the best 70's colour there is! As an added benifit it has a very professional Rover 3.5 V8, stainless headers & exhaust system so is pretty bulletproof and makes a good daily to boot.
Power steering, electric windows, electric aerial, electronic ignition, CD player, full new MOT, been through the last 4 MOTs with no work, 6 months tax and so on.....Hard top, soft top, wet weather gear, stand for the hardtop.....
The hardtop seems to do a fair job of keeping the water out (even in torrential rain) but the soft top definitely seems more effective. I suspect a little bit of fettling on clamping the hard top to the body more effectively, however, could remedy that...A new seal might help matters as well - not known for water ingress when new
That be her

Thanks Guys - great info! (Nice looking car Lashout UK, but unfortunately not in a position to buy presently). My thoughts about buying a Stag have been there for a while - and will continue to linger/haunt me I think. The plans with my Daimler Sovereign that I am re-building have been thrown askew somewhat. It is now turning into a very solid vehicle with no rust (for a '78 BL built car!!!). The original plan was to do what was necassary to get it safely back on the road. Dealing with the rust put paid to that plan - I decided to remove it all which was some job. Having now got a solid, dry shell, I have completely re-built the Webasto roof, fitted a new headlining, complete new floor soundproofing and next on the list is a new carpet. Outside, the paintwork although reasonable, will benefit from a complete professional re-spray. The chrome is good. I have also bought a set of 5 GKN Kent alloy wheels. These need re-furbishment and of course a new set of tyres. With luck, it will be on some shows next year. I think the Stag will be the next project!!!
