Is it possible to remove the brake backplate from the alloy rear upright?

This plate is bolted to the alloy upright and I am afraid that the steel bolts will break because of the steel/alloy corrosion.

After you have removed the hub etc you will find that the drum backplate will come off quite easily. You will most likely strip the alloy from the upright when removing which will necessitate helicoiling the threads.
Your first job though is to strip the stub axle assembly from the upright, do this by dropping the inner drive shaft and un doing the inner nut hidden behind the drive shaft flange. The whole hub unit and quill can then be withdrawn.

Then you can take the backplate out.

I dare say Adrian / Steve will be along with any tips since they have done far more than me. Mine are all still in one bit awaiting re-furb on the garage floor.

I'm not sure if the Vixen is similar to the M, if it is, these photographs show how to remove the back plate.
In theory the studs should be fixed into the upright and the nuts should be able to be removed off the studs without affecting the upright.
Use lots of dismantling release/penetrant agent(I use Plus gas)on the nuts, maybe even a little heat from a blow torch.
The back plate may be stuck to the upright but again plenty of release agent and gentle tap should shift it.
Hope this is of some help.

Hello John.
Just checked a vixen upright and the stud / nut arrangement is the same as the M arrangement, save for the inner hub nut and taking the quill and outer off the upright in one bit.

Neil.

When you reassemble might be worth using Permabond A171 (think thats the number) to prevent cathodic reaction and act as a thread lock.

Lotus use it when using steel fixings on the alloy components on the Elise.

On my vixen S2, it's the same thing
i have removing mine easely and the studs are staying in the Hub. try to remove it seems to me the better way to brake something (stud or aluminium upright)

the pivot bar seems to be very more harder to remove....
