Has anybody removed the sound insulation pad on their S? It looks as if mine has sagged and is ready to foul the throttle linkage - along with everything else on the top of the engine. I'm tempted to get rid of it , but is it there as sound deadening or to stop heat to the bonnet or both?

Thanks! (and one day I'll be able to make a contribution, but more questions than answers at the moment)

Minghis.

I think its both thermal and acoustic (and a b*****r to stick back). I had to use epoxy to get mine to stay in place.

Mine has none either. I'm thinking of getting tha quilted alloy foil type as I'm sure it would be easy to stick on than the blanket type.

My bonnet had cracks all over the place, and I always wondered if it was due to not having any insulation under the bonnet!

What do you think.

Much more likely that the cracks were caused by flexing rather than heat. Mine ran for at least 2 years (often stuck stationary on the M4) with no under bonnet blanket or anything and it wasn't cracked and showed no other ill-effects.

mines got nothing either- but has a patch of cracks above the battery looks as if previous owner tried to close bonnet while battery was in wrong place or left some thing on top of it . Shame really as these are the only cracks on whole car.Dump the insulation.

I've run mine for ten years without the insulation and had no problems.

I've got the padding, but I reckon it could well have been a third-party addition, as it looks in pretty good nick and is about 1/2 inch thick.

Hanging down a bit at the edges but as yet not enough to foul anything.

Makes me think though, if that stops heat soak to the bonnet, presumably it increases the heat into the passenger area.....

Mines an S1.5 2.9 - seems it did have one at one time, but the bugger's gone now (maybe it doubled as a picnic rug and just got left behind ). Think I'll just leave it as it is - no bonnet damage yet.
