Anyone else got a worn gearlever surround... just where reverse is selected...?

Wondering if this is an "undocumented feature"... as I MAY have an idea!

Yup.. And I have a problem with replacing it. Lets just say it relates to the size of the hole relative to the nob..

Speaking to a mate of mine who makes furniture. The idea is to replicate the piping around the seats, and place it round the surround (and the little cubby hole at the back), so it matches the car, but hides the worn bits.

I'll get to work on it!

When I first read this I assumed you meant the gator but you mean the transmission tunnel cover don't you? When I put my gearbox back in it required some adjustment of the rear gearbox mount for this rubbing not to happen. It's possible, therefore, that your rear gearbox mount (effectively the 3rd engine mount I guess) is worn and has too much play in it and that if you replace it you won't get as much lateral movement of the gearbox when you push the lever to the side to get it in reverse and you won't get the wear. Also whatever repair you effect to the worn bit will not be worn away in the same way.

Do you think that might work?

Agreed, a short term fix... but best option at the moment.

OIC.. Was thinking of my gator which is knackered.. Couple of small holes so I get a lot of dust and muck flicked up inside..

The trim on the transmission tunnel was obviously knackerd on my car a long time ago and has been stripped off.. Its now painted the same colour as the body of the car. Looks quite good IMHO, (though in need of a touch up..)

Edited to remove multiple spelling erorrs

You should have a rubber membrane under the leather gator pop riveted in place to the transmission tunnel under the trim.

Thanks Mark.. That would make sense.. Alas there isn't one.. Looks like ita been off and on a fair few times; another job for the summer's tinkering.. (Along with electrics, usual rust treatment on chassis, waterproofing etc etc..)

Any chance of a pic of the worn section? I don't think I'm suffering from this problem, but it'd be useful to check that I'm thinking of the right thing.

It'd also be interesting to see a pic of the painted transmission tunnel Psychobert, if poss.

Yup. And two pieces of Lego tucked under the rear tunnel top to jam the gaitor in position and stop it working loose! inherited from previous owner (or previous owner's small child?), rather than one of those 'normal' TVR idiosyncracies - like the graffiti under the rear carpet
