has anyone else seen these? Small grey cameras on top of tall grey posts? Weird thing is on the north circular there are 5 on the southbound approach to Hanger Lane, where there are 4 lanes.

anyone know what they're all about? I keep seeing more of the grey poles too - possibly SPECS?

cheers

Rich.

Havent seen them but chances are nothing to worry about ( kinda ) If they are small round cameras then you are fine they are ANPR cameras reading your reg to see if you have been naughty and not paid you tax etc....

There's some at the A13 end of the A406 as well. I'm guessing they're ANPR as there are 3, one for each lane.

if they are ANPR, I'm happy. My insurance has gone up enough because of the dodgers.

I'm still suspicious though - there are far too many of them about.

Strange thing is I thought there were 5 on each pole. We're talking about the ones west of Beckton yes?

Hmm. My memory could be playing tricks on me. I was thinking of the ones as you go away from Beckton towards Barking.

they don't quite look like those in the links, but similar. i've just found some photos on tyresmoke

in close-up

interestingly, there's one just as you enter the 40 limit coming into London on the A40, before the Hanger Lane turnoff and right in front of an existing gatso!

these have also appeared on the A4 near the Hammersmith flyover.

we really are being filmed in out and all around london now, and the latest news is the police will now have access to the congestion charge camera network to detect 'terror' threat.

So does this mean that potential car bombers are going to be registering their chosen vehicle in their name/address before they set off? Somehow I doubt it.

that's one hell of a crackdown on tax and insurance dodgers if they are - they're sprouting up everywhere!

any chance they might be traffic monitoring for Wembley (see bottom of page here)?

or maybe they're part of the new Low Emissions Zone Low Emissions Zone (or LEZ for short - the juvenile in me loves that rolleyes)

ANPR is often used for traffic monitoring, not enforcement purposes. Could be that.

According to an article in yesterdays Standard, they are indeed anpr cameras. 'Tis part of Leninstone's new anti-pollution against HGV's. Evidently they can also measure the amount of emissions from ones exhaust. Where will this all end?

This is just the start, from just the installation of these cameras along the A406, those in power will be able to:

1. Calculate your average speed over the distance between the cameras
2. Check for tax/insurance (should have a field day around Wembley)
3. Use details for congestion charging by type of vehicle

Rolled out nationally:

1. Calculate your carbon footprint
2. Charge you accurately for every journey
3. Identify your journey patterns and issue marketing materials accordingly

Who said technology was a good thing...

What is the point of a static ANPR camera??

Surely you need a cop to actually stop the unregistered car, or ANPR is pointless.

added:

silly me, its just more surveillance on properly registered vehicles isn't it..

I too was wondering what they were for, as I got a mailshot a month ago telling me that they are introducing a CC zone around the A406 and most of the City Airport and docklands, I thought it was for that, and other things. You know how Leninstone is with his charging. Anyway if he starts charing for Carbon footprint, then I have an ace up my sleeve.

I am setting up a company to offset your carbon footprint, all Phead'rs will be able to offset their footprint by planting trees & and at the same time helping to give work to people in a developing country.

Killing to birds with one stone....

No they don't - they'll capture registrations and the system will check the DVLA/LEZ database to confirm whether the vehicle complies with the relevant emissions standards...
