Thanks for the advice w.r.t lack of SUL ...the Millers OB kept me on boost !

Just back after doing Aberdeen, Glasgow, Loch Lomond, Fort William, Spean Bridge, North & West Skye, Plockton, Applecross, Fort Augustus, Inverness and then Aberdeen.

Saw some great scenery and the Scooby never missed a beat. Was lucky with the weather too.

Enjoy the summer folks

Cal

Great Pics. Scotland has some of the best driving roads in the world. Knocks Wales's best out the park. Next time, try North of Ullapool. It's VERY fast and quiet up there!

I have just returned home from a ten day holiday in Scotland after taking some advice from PH'rs North of the border.
I got up to Lochinver and enjoyed some great scenery and driving roads in the North West highlands.
Unfortunately I am without a sports car at the moment so could not realy enjoy the fast sweeping roads but I will return with the weapon of choice soon.
As a side note, whilst filling up with fuel in Ullapool was speaking to a guy in a lotus 7 who was traveling down to Cambridge alone without a windscreen and a forcast for torrential rain......respect!

Thanks to all you guys who gave me the info.

I was up there (Locinver area) Wed, Thurs, Fri last week, what a fantastic area. Went canoeing, climbed a mountain, sat on the beach, got sun-burnt feet and drove on some amazing roads with stunning scenery.
The best bit of Scotland IMO.

If you want a REAL road, try Lairg to Altnaharra and then on up by Loch Hope to Durness. Do it by day on the way up and enjoy the drop-dead scenery, then try coming back in the dark. You can see lights coming miles off and give it a bit of pedal....
If it's just scenery you're after, head through Inverpolly past Stac Pollaidh and into Lochinver that way. If you get a good sunset you'll never want to go to the Med again! From Lochinver, pop in to Achmelvich Bay then nip up to Drumbeg. Only problem is the odd caravan, which makes you wish you had a gattling gun mounted on the bonnet.
The best car to do it in is, of course, one of the kit variety, with an attractive companion/victim by your side and a spare pair of underpants tied to the roll cage as your luggage. Tin top drivers may have to be satisfied with a spot of Jimmy Shand on the CD player.

Hiya Cal,

That Applecross road is a cracker! Getting 50 lotus up and down it during last years TT was fairly entertaining!

Hope to see you soon, cheers Ed

Looks great, I'm off up there with the Mini Cooper S in September. By the look of those roads the girlfriend will have to sit down and shut up!
Where exactly is Applecross?
I'm going for 2 weeks and going all around the coast and then back to the midlands.

Hi Ben... check out www.stevecarter.com/bestuk.htm - Applecross is 100 miles north of Fort William and 75 miles west of Inverness. Gods own country! (I'll look out for you).

I've had Porkers, Beemers, Caterhams, a Lotus, an RS6 and an Aston up here, but the Applecross road was most fun in a Mini Cooper S - make sure you do it clockwise (and check the handbrake afterwards wink )

Cheers Steve,
I am adjusting my plans to try and get it in. The pictures look great.
I will be sure to post some pictures on my return!

I will be comming down from Ullapool after a night and then hedding on to Skye that day - don't know if I will have time to do it all - should I go anticlockwise and make the most of what I can fit in?

cheers Ben

Definately (unless it's pi55ing down - in which case just get indoors). Go Ullapool, Gairloch, Kinlochewe, Torridon, Shieldaig, Applecross, Kishorn, Lochcarron, Kyle > Skye

I guess that's about 3 hours plus stops from Ullapool to the Skye bridge - a great drive. If it IS crap weather, then Ullapool, Garve, Achnasheen, Lochcarron, Kyle is the quick way.

Not many peeps know this but in the 50's Jimmy Shand was one of the foremost motorcycle scrambller tuners in the country, he could often be seen riding his Norton Commando around Kinross and Auchtermuchty (where he lived). A real Petrolhead!

Indeed he was. He was a good friend of my late father-in-law and often visited the old maltings in Freuchie to see his collection of Rudges and other vintage bikes. A really lovely guy, he was still riding a big powerful bike when most of us are wheeling a zimmer. His music should be an inspiration to the tin toppers!!

Keep meaning to get up there and have a cruise around, looks simply stunning.

I was wondering what the weather 'normally' does in the first week of September up there and whether you can just chance your luck on places to stay ??

Weather is generally OK in September - not as good as May or June but MUCH better than October. Also, as the Schools have gone back, last minute accommodation is usually no problem. I've a list of B&Bs and hotels on my www.Shieldaig.org website
