Right, not a definite yet but provided we get an Emerald dealer on board, we have Dave Walker's blessing to go ahead. If anyone is interested in getting hold of one of these well regarded aftermarket ECUs at a discount price please get your name down on this list and express your interest. The discount will largely depend on numbers so the more the merrier! Depending on the dealer, we might also be able to negotiate a good price for fitting and RR setup if required.

Well at the moment it looks like Joolz is interested so just have to wait for him to have a word with Dave @ Emerald and work out a deal for us... I'll try speak to him and see what he says.

Sorry to quibble chaps but what spec will these ECU's be? Presumably 4 coil outputs to get rid of the dizzy and 4 injector drivers to fire the injectors in pairs?

Are there still enough outputs to drive the standard stepper motor or do you need to fit a 2 wire ford / VW type?
Will they be configured to take wide-band lambda input to run the closed loop?

Apologies for the questions but I'm tempted to hammer the credit card some more......

Get thee behind me..

All is explained in great detail in the emerald web site shown above.thumbup

Yes, it will replace the dizzy and run a crank trigger wheel, thus making the dizzy redundant. After speaking to Joolz at Track Car, we will probably be going without an idle control valve and instead using some clever mapping to alleviate the need for a stepper motor all together! This should sort out any idle problems for good and silence the 'clean the stepper motor' brigade once and for all.

Emerald does also support the wideband lambda sensor and so will run closed loop and use adaptive mapping

Go on, you know the credit card can take it, think of the benefits! driving

I'm tempted. But can someone list the supposed benefits we are likely to be gaining?

Found this when browsing, if you are interested I know an Omex dealer - so could see what price he would do for you all as an alternative (with or without setup) if anyone was interested. If not, don't worry smile

well actually the website states that there are 3 coil drivers so not enough for wasted spark and 4 coils.
The reason I ask is when I had the very first dizzyless V8 ECU from Emerald about 5 years ago it involved a bit of re-jigging on their part to add the additional drivers.

I would not run without an idle speed control valve of some sort as well , it makes quite a difference to how the car drives in traffic and its generally far nicer.
I'll happily junk the cr@p rover stepper and fit a 2 wire Ford type but I'd want the output from the ECU to run it.

I'm sure Emerald can deliver what we want but I'd like to be sure about the spec before parting with any cash

Ah I see, yes they add an additional driver for the V8 application and you can use the Ford ISCV no problem but after speaking to Jules he reckons he has had very good results of late without using one. Its up to you though of course!

While speaking to Jules he also said that lead times and prices will come down much easier if the order is mostly standardised so he is going to draw up a basic package of all the bits you need including a part built loom (just requires the engine-side wires connecting up). This will also include the K3 box with the additional driver fitted and all required bits. As soon as I get the message from him I will let you know what the standard package consists of.

More power, as the std air flow meter is restrictive and the dizzy limits the amount of spark which can be pumped in mid range

Better fuel economy , you can run a bit leaner here and there plus the mapped spark helps quite bit with this

Easier DIY fix, as you can 'see' the workings of the ECU plus its got a data logger so any iffy sensors etc are shown up

Future proofing, as any other mods don't need another chip and rolling road session

Convinced yet?
