Heading up to the north west in a couple of weeks time. I thought I might head up via Loch Shin or Ledmore Junction rather than go through Ullapool. Problem is last time i drove those roads was in a Subaru 1800 coupe about 13 years ago. What are the A837 and A838 like to drive in a fast car?

I would also like to know what the road from Achnasheen to Lochcarron is like?

As a way of cutting from West to East I drove the A837 (where it meets the A835) eastwards to where it meets the A836. No problem with the surface but not safe to really put your foot down. Lot's of single track with pull ins.

Sorry don't know about the A838.

Not driven the ful A890 but on the basis if you carried on a bit you'd get to the Applecross pass it's got to be worth a punt?

No need to discuss whats north of Kylescu on a public forum. Horrible place...

Daz, What was the A837 like? Good scenery? Much traffic/caravans. Twisty or generally straight. The Single track road from Lairg to Tongue is epic - if the 837 is anything like that then it would be worth a try. Or do I just enjoy the delights of the A835 both ways?

Very little traffic and belting down with rain. This was travelling on a saturday afternoon in mid march. If you want to get to Kylesku quickly by all mean drive up the A9 and then cut across. Certainly no problem with the road surface or maintaining an average above the NSL.

Although tbh if you can add an extra day or two why not do some of the west coast. You mentioned the A890, take it south west to do the Applecross pass then cut up to Gairloch (Email if you want to know the pub/hotel we've used the last two years). Then the following morning Kylesku is only a couple of hours of exceptional driving via Ullapool (The Shell garage there has 1 optimax/VPower pump making it a must stop!).
