Seems to me that the 6-cyclinder XJRs are the ones to go for on a value-for-money basis, and they have no Nikasil issues either.

What are the things to look out for, or common failures / problems with the X300 series? I gather they're pretty bombproof. Does that include all the electrics too?

The X300 has two cats, one a small one after the manifold, the other a huge great thing which runs most the length of the car under the floor to the back axel, these tend to rust through as they are not made of cast iron as per the manifold cats, I don’t know of an after market supplier, and the Jag ones are rather expensive – make sure you inspect it

Also gearbox mounts tend to fail, and the gear box and rear axle can be prone to oil leaks, rear shocks tend to knock, and suspension mounts and bushes tend to have free play once they have a few miles. Other than that they are pretty good.

Best wishes
