Sorry I was referring to PHer 'ScoobieWRX' who has a somewhat tweaked bugeye WRX wagon and is generally full of helpful hints on these matters.

General first stages for modding a turbo Scoob (or turbo anything really) are a larger diameter freer-flowing exhaust, better flowing air filter (eg a K&N panel to drop into the standard airbox), and an ECU remap from someone who knows their Subs. Those together should give a healthy increase in grunt throughout the rev range for a relatively low cost.

I'm told a brake cylinder brace and braided hoses significantly improve pedal feel, and I can tell you from first hand experience that EBC redstuff pads are much more fade resistant than the standard items.
Not horsepower mods I appreciate, but they'll significantly enhance your driving pleasure, unless you just want to hoon in straight lines.

Ahem....upgrades...yessss
Start with green cotton flat panel air filter to directly replace the OEM one thereby allowing 45% more airflow into the turbo and better inhalation. You will notice better throttle response as a result of doing just this little mod, and so inexpensive to do.
A Snorkus mod is next cutting out the restrictive and bulbous resonator that takes a whole heap of air to fill it up, better without it....and besides i like the induction noise which to be honest is very limited anyway. You get airflow straight into the air filter, and it's a free mod.
Yes the exhaust is a big help and that allows the engine to exhale more easily, plus it will really sound the biz. Even just chainging the backbox for a non restrictive stailess steel large bore single pipe setup will free up a couple of horses, reduce back pressure, allowing the turbo to spool just a little quicker. The whole thing though if you can stretch to a whole exhaust is better, to include a decat up-pipe.
On a scooby you only need 1 cat in the downpipe to get you through the MOT. Hope this helps. good luck

Al, I think on the 2001 (Bug Eye) it should have 4 pots, not the crappy 2 pots we have, so braking should be ok but braided hoses do help.
Definately do the exhaust and air filter, if nothing else it makes it sound how it goes (fast)
I would be wary of replacing the whole exhaust in one go though, you might find it is a little boomy and loud especially in a wagon. Start with the backbox and see how you go.
A good one to go for is the Hayward and Scott exhaust for the New Age. http://www.haywardandscott.com
If you want really loud go for an Afterburner Vortex. www.scoobyworld.co.uk
After you have driven it for a while you may feel the handling could do with sharpening up. If so have a look at an anti lift kit from Powerstaion http://www.powerstation.org.uk/subaru_chassis.asp.
After that it depend how far you want to go. A remap should get you a few more BHP (270 ish) without stressing the car too much.
Oh and make sure it has good tyres at the right pressures. It make a huuuuuuge difference.

I currently map my own and i estimate something like 250 - 260bhp over the standard 215bhp. Thats with all 3 cats in place as i haven't converted the whole exhaust yet...just the backbox - TSL GroupN with roll end 4" tailpipe in Stainless steel. Sounds lovely...very deep burble and not too loud. And of course the green panel air filter and Snorkus mod.
I recommend EBC Rotors with redstuff pads all round. Not too expensive and much better than OEM braking, plus of course goodridge stainless steel braided brake hoses and DOT 5.1 brake fluid as i have done.
I also fitted Whiteline front anti-roll bar end links and Powerflex rear end links...that gets rid of the standard nasty plastic ones and any undue squatting when pulling away quickly specially on roundabouts. Improves handling no end. Another cheap mod!!
These are all the mods i have at the mo and as i free up cash i will do some more mods. Next i would like the rest of the GroupN exhaust and decat up-pipe plus some prodrive springs and Perrin ALK's please!! It should then be good for 280bhp and have a lot less roll and understeer!! Then some nice wheels and a respray after that and we're good to go.
