hi all

i wondered whether anyone could enlighten me to a rather furstrating problem i am having today. my car is a 1998 XJR

the fob for the alarm stopped working the same time as i received two messages telling me

1. boot is open
2. bulb failure

i have checked the boot fuses and bulbs and found nothing wrong. great i thought no warning lights.

however now

1. car won't start with key
2. boot won't open and no amount of WD40 and wiggling of key will release it manually

this came about when i left the car outside (unlocked) and when i got into it the alarm sounded. key in ignition (which i thought would override the alarm in these cases) but nothing? even the central locking with the key has stopped working. i can't imagine the battery would have dischraged itself after an hour of use when there wasnt a problem before

is my car dead? or just playing dead?

it also seems not to react any better with volley of swearing and shouting!!

has anyone else experienced this before or has anyone any ideas?

many thanks in advance

matt

You should, eventually be able to get the boot lock to work with the key. FFS be gentle 'tho, breaking the key or lock will really make your day.

When you get the boot open try disconnecting the battery for a while and then reconnecting. This may clear the fault, don't forget to check you have the radio code.

Try spare keys and fobs too - but not the green valet key - that shouldn't open the boot

my day has been, so far..... choice!

i shall continue to be gentle with my wiggling and try disconnecting the battery upon entry.

any ideas what the little red light flashing next to the J-box is?

thanks again

That's the security warning showing the alarm is part or fully armed.
If most or all of the electrics are dead you can power up the car by attaching a +ve supply from another battery to the terminal near the brake fluid reservior and a -ve to a good earth on the engine block.

If you're not confident you know what you are doing I'd suggest you get help before you do this. The potential for fried electric modules is high if you get it wrong. banghead

Once you have power you should be able to open the boot using the remote switch by the headlight adjuster, and disconnect the battery.

When you've done this, and got power back have a look on the jaglovers site for info on programming the alarm and key fobs (sorry I don't know how to do the link, but it's on the Jaguar forum here with another alarm problem) to see if that helps.

steve, many thanks for the heads up, after quite a while of wiggling the key i gained access to the boot and found about 2 inches of water in the boot, coming in through the petrol cap.... drilled two small holes, drained the water and jump started the barge.

all electrics are ok (touch wood) and she seems fine at the moment.

did a search on the cat-lovers site and found the threads for the reprogramming of the key fob which i shall try this morning.

cheers once again

Get in there with a hair dryer ASAP and really dry everything out. Some of the connectors carry such a small amount of current even a tiny bit of corrosion or damp will really F censored K the electrics up.

Is the filler cap drain tube blocked? That's the little bit sticking up next to the petrol cap. You can easily pull this off to clean it, and check the tube is clear at the same time with a small amount of water.

There have been cases of water getting into the petrol tank yikes 'cos the drain is blocked when the filler cap is remove to fill up.

Glad It's all OK 'tho, modern XJ's can be a nightmare.

BW for the reprogramming
