XJR...I didn't expect it to be quite like this

I drove the latest addition to the stable home to Stockport yesterday, unfortunately it was not quite as desired as Mrs C was following behind, and I promised not to disappear into the horizon leaving her to navigate the qualities of the M62 trans pennine numptyway. It was not the best way to 'enjoy' a new purchase at quarter throttle believe me.

So this morning I had to drop No.1 child at the train station as she's returning to barracks today....this is where the fun began. Apologies to the Boxter driver who was out enjoying a few twisties with his hood down...(but you really should drive a little faster when you get the chance)..and the look of astonishment on his face when we nailed him at the traffic light Grand Prix would have been even funnier if daughter and I hadn't have been wetting ourselves with fits of giddy adrenalin filled laughter worthy of of couple of five year olds.

This thing is quick...yes very quick, at a standing start the beast lifts the front end, squats the rear into position and launches forward with abandon, then at 2.5k he/she hits starship mode and just propels forward defying all reason that a car this big can move with such grace and speed. The handling is just remarkable too, no scuttle shake like my XJS, no body roll and the arse end just grips and pushes you through...what a joy.

The steering feels tight and is responsive and the throttle travel is much stiffer than I expected (for a good reason I suppose)

For a 12 year old car this thing is amazing, A real wolf in seeps clothing, one minute it's just another 'old mans luxury barge' and then it springs to life with consummate ease and becomes a truly aggressive monster that wants to devour everything in it's way.

The result is I'm smitten, I couldn't think of a finer way to spend my work day between appointments, I even look forward to going to work on Tuesday. There are so many buttons to play with...electric everything, nice music system and plenty of other toys to keep your average man-child well occupied.

It is just soooo different to the XJS...I really didn't expect it to be quite like this

We get a lot of XJRs at the car auction. I love them.
Comfortable and powerful and the steering lock for tight corners and parking leaves many smaller cars in its shadow. Good choice.

I guess that would be a straight six model.
I was involved in the V8 so it's one of my favourites, the straight six is a very tough unit though and also avaliable with the manual Getrag 290 box.

Spent the day giving the beast a good 'fettling' as it was filthy, the leather was just gopping...no rips just not treated or fed...has come up like new. Cream is not my first choice but at the price I paid it wasn't to be sniffed at. The paint has come up lovely, just a few minor stone chips and a couple of blemishes...one just behind the front grill cowell and another on the sunrooof lip...but nothing nasty and considering it's twelve years old it is now a 'minter'

I will change the oil and belt this week and then send it for MOT and may even change a few bushes for polyprop here and there.

I will keep this one as I'm smitten...big time

Anyone know of any discrete mods...engine wise to eek out a few more ponies? or handling mods (not that it's a slouch but improvement can help with wear and tear issues)

I think these produce somewhere around 327 BHP as standard against the 370 of the V8. not sure about the torque will check through the literature in a bit.

what were the published 0 - 60 times for both variants? anyone know?

also where'sthe best place to buy replacement badges as mine are starting to delaminate a bit and could do with a change. Some new clearlenses for the indicators may look nice too if I can find some...along with some brighter headlamps.

I think the torque figures for the 95 XJR-6 was in the region of about 378 ft lbs

0-62mph I read somewhere t'other day was quoted as being 6.6 Seconds

The old straight six supercharger used an M90 rootes blower and I think it was rated at 320 Bhp. I dont recall the performance figures- 0-60 mph in perhaps 6 seconds?
I think both the straight six and Jag V8 are pretty robust.
The six has the benefit of being an engine at the very end of it's development.
