Cardbus serial for CNC

Am finding it increasingly difficult to find a decent laptop with a serial and parallel port.
USB to serial adapters don't seem to be fully compatible with a program using the memory map 0x2F8 etc especially if there are timing issues involved like CNC. Some programs even use the port directly without the usual operating system niceities.
Does anyone know how cardbus is dealt with in the computer and how its memory mapped?
