Hi Folks

I would be interested to hear your opinions on the Citroen C4 Coupe VTS - General views but also which engine is better, 180Hp petrol with just 145 Torque or the 138Hp HDi with 250+ Torque.

i personally would go for the diesel....lots better mpg for not alot of difference in speed and also diesels tend to hold their money better for when you come to sell it on yourself

My mate's got the VTS diesel with all the toys.

It's a great car (quick-ish, loads of kit, looks different) but it's been plagued with problems from day one. (engine problems, injector problems, poor fuel economy, strange noises, replacement allsorts!) He bought his as a "keeper" but is now going to get rid before the warranty expires.

His was one of the first out (05 'plate) so maybe they're a bit better now?

Problems aside, it's still a fairly uncommon sight on the roads, and there are big discounts to be had.

At the right price, I'd have one.

Thanks for the responses so far

I have had a C4 VTR+ before with the Diesel engine & it was better quality than i had been expecting from the brand. it was a hire car & i did 18k in it in just 6 months, nothing went wrong at all.

For the VTS i want the glass roof, full leather, JBL stereo, Navigation etc so it will be full of toys.

Just fancied something different, what else would you have ?

Any comments would be appreciated

I've got a VTR+ as a hire car at the moment, and it seems to have absolutely no feedback through the steering at all. Is this the same on all C4 models? I find it quite unnerving not having any idea on a wet road whether the front tyres are about to slip. Also the pedals are incredibly light and free from feel.

I'm sure it's fine as a shopping car for those that don't care, but as a car for a member of Pistonheads, I'd have said it's miles off the mark.

I think they seem to differ quite a lot, what engine do you have ? mine had the 2.0HDi. The steering feel wasnt the best but it was better than Fords Focus or the Megane.

As for pedals. no issue to raise, mine seems fine. Braking was particularly good on the country lanes

It's 1.6 petrol, maybe that's why. It could also be down to personal preferences, as I find my Focus has much nicer steering and control weighting (although the mk1 was better), and even a Megane was ok when bits weren't falling of in my hands laugh

I think I'll swap it for another hire car tomorrow, as I'm going to cornwall on Thurs and I'm finding the seating position very uncomfortable after only a 10 mile commute, so after 250 miles I'd be in agony!!

thats interesting as i find the VTR+ mesh type seats to be some of the most comfortable i have used. i do about 800 miles a week & this car tired me less than the focus etc.
The only seats i would rate better were the recaro's in my Accord type-R

However it may be the engine as it cruises at 80 in 6th at only 2000 rpm so i dont even hear the engine. Also the petrols are not Citroens strongest point, hence starting this thread about petrol or diesel in the VTS. I reckon i'll go for Diesel.

As someone who has had both, I would recommend the diesel. Easily chipped to around 170bhp. The only things to remember are that the petrol is the only car in the range where the ESP is able to be switched off completely, and it has the boot spoiler and Xenon headlamps as standard where they're optional on the diesel. I've never had a problem with either of my C4s so I would highly advocate either, with a preference for the diesel.

I collected an iron grey C4 VTS Diesel on Friday. It has the glass roof, full leather, navi-drive sat nav, JBL Stereo system with jukebox..........all the toys

Its really good, but as with all 6 speed diesels, runs out of guts at 4250 rpm. But keep it 2000 - 4000 through the gears and it leaves most things behind.

Driven 260 miles today in torrential rain & it gives so much confidence for such a small car, i love it.

Seems to turn heads too which is niiiiiice !

i know a lady and her fella that brought one very similar to urs and they love it, they kitted it out with everything possible, even got an amazing body kit for it. good luck with it

done 1200 miles now & its all pretty great......
.....wish they'd put the 2.2Hdi in it tho with 173hp

Most impressive is the JBL stereo upgrade, i thought the sub looked small but it packs quite a punch

I've been asking Citroen constantly about putting the 173 engine in a C4. I'm currently driving a C5 2.2HDi 173 at the moment and feck can it go!!

If you want to make it a reality, get on to Citroen on 0870 6069000 and ask for Jean Francois Varet (head of product development) The more people that do it the more notice they'll take!

(I've also been asking for a 2.0 turbo 4wd mad bstrd car but it's very unlikely they're gonna do that!!!!)

Your GTA looks sweet !

I have done 8000+ miles in my C4 coupe VTS now and its great.
The problem with the C5 2.2 is the residual values are poor and the tax hits me hard, it would cost me £120 extra a month. I also dont beleive they are as eager in the twisties than the C4, would you agree ?

The C5 isn't a great handling car at all!!

The front end is very vague, mainly due to the hydractive suspension but it does corner remarkably flat. Personally I'd rather have my C4 back, but I think I'll wait to get the new C5 when it comes out in March. It looks awesome!!

I've been lucky enough to see one of the first new C5's

It is superb & if you could afford it, will come with the 2.7 Hdi from the C6 & Jaguar.

Its a big car, like the new mondeo but with flair

C4 vtr 1.6 hdi 110 is the best mate If you go the VTS route there is a exhaust particulate filter and these are trouble and expensive Dont go there! I know i work on them The C5 2.2 has the same system
