Im pretty set on changing my car to a MR2 Mk 3 manual in feb, so i have a few q's if thats ok:

I did do a search for these on the forums and didnt find anything but apologies any are repeats.

1) Over the life of the mk3 were there any additions/improvements (e.g. is a 2004 model much better than a 2000 model?) On wikipedia theres a small amount of info about it, but im not sure if that only applies to the USA etc or not.

2) How much should i be looking to spend at a dealer (doesnt have to be a toyota dealer)

3) Is there a mileage benckmark that I shouldnt buy past?

4) Is Aircon necessary?

5) What MPG should I be expecting? 38 is what the specs say but how accurate is that?

I await your infinite knowledge!

There isnt much difference between the original Mk3 and the revision. The revised one has a different style rear cluster, 16" wheels in the back instead of 15" and colour coded air intakes. All cosmetic really.

How much to spend depends on what you want, they start around 6k and go up to 12 maybe 13kish. Personally, i would look for a Roadster Red. Its a limited edition with twin exhaust, chrome interior bits, red leather and other red details inside and a red roof. It was only made in a limited edition graphite colour. You can pick them up for about 11k.

Where mileage is concerned, some of the first models had problems around 40-60k with oil getting into the fuel system but this was quickly sorted. Also the alloys suffer badly from corrosion so check them carefully, iv known people to have them replaced twice during the 3 year warranty period!!

Aircon is up to you. I never had it in mine when i owned one and my mate did, but driving an ordinary car with the aircon on and the windows down doesnt help to cool you so i would imagine aircon and roof down would be worse. Besides, if its that hot, your roof is off!!

MPG is very good, 38mpg was easily achieved in mine.

Hope this helps,
Ian
