New Wireless Routers - A recommendation please!!

I've been running a 3 Com router now for about 5 years and served its purpose well.
The problem I have now is that I need to upgrade so I have more range as more gadgets appear in the house.
The router lives on the third floor of the house and laptops etc pick it up well on the ground floor, but not so well when I venture into the conservatory or garden.
Also some of the lesser spec wireless equipment I have struggles to maintain a link.

So basically what is the best on the market for range and stability

Personally, I've had nothing but trouble with connection stability on Netgear stuff over the past couple of years. Old Netgear stuff was excellent.
