What was he convicted of then? I wasn't aware that speeding carried a possible jail term.

Be interested to understand his average speeds... Think 172 mph is a little excessive for our roads... The report I read did not say the time at which he was flying...

Court was told that the stopping distance would have been 500 metres....

Surely a 996 TT would be a lot less...??
This table http://www.movit.de/rahmen/stoptbl.htm reckons 208m from 245km/h (152 mph).

I do hope so, then he could be out on a technicality. Tough break for the lad.

yes
Anyone who has been to VMAX will tell you a 996/997 TT will brake from 172mph to 0 in a lot less than 500 metres. Eg, in dry conditions 190 to 0 has been done in <400 metres......

That'll be as per the highway code which is still based on 1960s cars average breaking distance. That's what the govt use for official figures despite them being pitifully out of date.

But, technicality or not, he'd have a hard time justifying the speed with a, "But I'm in a Porsche, your Honour. It's stopping time would be 300m!"

Using laws of motion, stopping distance alone from 172mile/h assuming an average decel of 1.0g (typical value for good performance tyres on a your average dry road surface, potentially 1.1 or 1.2 on a test track) is 301m.

Highway code says a reaction time of 0.68s IIRC so that's another 52m, more likely reaction time is a 1 second from seeing something to applying braking so that would be an 77m, so total distance would be the order of 350 to 380m assuming the driver hit the brakes hard enough to achieve full decel, (which most people generally don't, hence brake assist systems being fitted to cars). 500m is pessimistic, but not entirely unrealistic.

Didnt top gear years ago show that a 993T4 could go from 100 to 0 in 75 feet?

The man is cleary a bit of dickhead for getting caught going that quick, but 10 weeks in jail?

Aren't we only jailing the most serious offenders these days? Oh................

8 weeks for owning an illegal dog that killed a small girl verses 10 weeks for speeding.

What will 10 weeks actually translate to?

I like going quick. A speed limit can only ever be a generalisation and a guide. There are times and places where massive speeds can be safe in the right hands. However when I hear tales of 172 mph the first thing I think of is that it could have been my wife and child on the same bit of road with 100mph speed differential betweem the cars.
