After years of BMW ownership, Mostly M cars, I have been driving a 1.9TDi Sport Avant as a daily load lugger for a week or so now and really like it.
I am now considering buying an Audi Avant for myself but being used to M cars, it needs to be very special.
Would an RS4 do the job for me?
Anything to look out for?
Colours to avoid etc etc??
Thanks

I have just done similar but bought an RS4 saloon after years of M3's and various 911's and i have to say its quite impressive...reasonably quick, good handling, but most of all superb build quality..it seems a bit juicy however so i wouldnt buy one if i was doing high mileage..I am now considering buying an Audi Avant for myself but being used to M cars, it needs to be very special.

This is probably the best resource for anything RS4 related.
All I can say is that if you like the 1.9 TDi, then from a ride and handling point of view, the RS4 will blow you away.
Having driven a standard 3.0 ltr TDi Avant S-Line for a week earlier in the year, I thought the RS4 Avant was going to be too hard and even more like a pogo stick in the ride department.
One drive af the RS4 and there is no doubt it is nothing like an S-Line car. The ride is fantastic, and it has real handling.
The great thing about the Avant is that it is exactly the same dimensions as the Saloon, so feels very chuckable and compact on tight roads, but has the big boot and decent accomodation inside. Though not too much legroom in the back seats.
General concensus on colours, is everything looks good, but if you want safe, easy to shift-on colour, stick to black, grey or dark blue. Make sure you get one with Tech Pack (Mav, Adaptive lights, iPod or Multi CD).
Did you also know that order books are closed, and if you are looking for new, there is a very limited supply. You can get a very good discount on pre-reg or demos. Do your research and haggle hard and you'll save a few thousand very easily.
Great car though. Get one while you can.

As has already been said - phantom black, mugello blue, daytona grey, avus silver are pretty safe bets. Sprint blue has its fans too, although it's a bit less subtle.
Tech pack is a must have.
The only real dilemma, outside of colour, that people seem to have is regarding the seats. The bucket seats are great once you're in them, but they're not too easy to get in and out of. The optional Recaros are maybe more practical, but they don't hold you as well. The buckets also have inflatable side bolsters in "sport" mode (you lose the inflatable bolsters with the Recaros).
Assuming the car's been specced for phone use, some people think the dash-mounted phone cradle is ugly; the alternative is that you have a GSM phone prep in the armrest but this means you lose the flat-bottomed wheel. You'll probably not want to lose the flat-bottomed wheel.

Thanks guys, I think I need to get my butt in gear and test drive one.
Just for fun before I put the TDi Avant on the forecourt, I've put some rs4 alloys and badges on it. It actually looks very good.
Next to a real RS4 it will look pants, trust me. Also a TDi goes pants compared to a RS4, again trust me on that.Just for fun before I put the TDi Avant on the forecourt, I've put some rs4 alloys and badges on it. It actually looks very good.

that is a pretty good price
RS4 is very well specced as std so on that list the satnav only cost £500 and the phone prep another £400 so pretty minimum spec
unless the guy had the good sense to retrofit the phone it will have an ugly plank of a phone charger on the dash that will not to be removed with a new interior panel IMHO

- I have found the Recaros to be very supportive during blasts round the country lanes**

- You can have the dash mounted cradle removed and still retain the bluetooth hands free functionality**
