Right, Got my virgin media non cable broadband activated today and have (obviously) got it working on the little modem that came in the starter pack

However, I have no intention in using the said modem, and have a modem/router sitting next to me One of these

This is where it all goes slightly over my head... for setting up the router, its asking for stuff like:

VPI/VCI parameters
multiplexing method/encapsulation type
host and domain names
DNS address
Fixed or static IP

I don't even know what half of those are!

Can anyone help me!?

To make matters worse our water is currently turned off! furious

Hi Peanutjb, well i can help on some of that,

VPI/VCI parameters -

These are always set to 0 on VPI and 38 on VCI

multiplexing method/encapsulation type

This should be set to PPPoA

Now the below bits,

In theory if you change the encapsulation to PPPoA on the router it should just give you a username and password box and normally unless you have specified, you should just have a Dynamically assigned IP rather than a static.

but the DNS and domain name for virgin media are below.

Primary DNS: 194.168.4.100
Secondary DNS: 194.168.8.100
Domain Name: virgin.net

host and domain names
DNS address
Fixed or static IP

Cheers, Dan.

The latest routers will autodetect the VCI, Mux and Encapsulation etc.

Name = JibberJabber. smile

Seriously, it looks like an area for you to enter a name for that connection rather than anything to do with the VM side of things. So just type... whatever smile

You may joke, but my old wireless network was actually called Dave... he was a naughty boy!

Believe it or not, I still haven't got the thing to work! I've gone through that previous page as so

But now it just sits there with connecting... as DSL status

It never asked for DNS addresses which seems a bit funky... has anyone got any ideas?

Hmm. I would check to make sure the cable is plugged in and all is as it should be. It's complaining that the line is disconnected, not 'invalid username/password'.

Your line may have been provisioned as PPPoE, try reconfiguring to PPPoE and reconnecting. If you still have the line disconnected error, I suggest trying your USB modem again to check whether or not it is your router or the line at fault.

check filters etc and replace cable between router and wall.

borrow another router just to check whether it detects a DSL siganl.

Cable works fine with the modem supplied by virgin... will try setting as PPoE

Does anyone have any experience with ebuyer returns?

Cheers

Don't think that's the problem. But good luck with it anyway!

it would be odd but maybe the cable with the modem requires a twist and the router needs a straight through, you never know. i would always use the cable that came with the equipment.
