how can i tell by just looking at the engine if the car is a 4.0 or a 4.0HC , just been looking at a very fine example but told myself that if i go for a 4.0 then it must be a HC model , and the seller did not know ,the engine just has 400 on the top, yes i know they are all fast but the HC will get up there quicker yes......

You can't. There is normally a badge but you can buy those for a few pounds. Check the provenance if it is that important.

Mine has a 4.0 HC badge on the engine block, but being a TVR that is no guarantee of anything

From memeory when i was looking got hung up on the same thing. HC should be etched on the VIN plate with the chassis number. Or you could just buy a 5l!!!.

I have an HC and the owners Handbook has it written on the car details page.

There will be fast 4.0's and slow 4.0HC's though... every car is a bit different.. My 4.0 felt faster than the 4.3 I was in the day beforehand when I was out shopping for one.. ..don't get too hung up on engine size

Cheers
Matt.

I think the HC thing is a distraction, you should ignore it. You will not notice the difference in performance, and other factors like mechanical condition and trim are far more important. If performance is that important to you, consider now whether you should go for a larger engined model at the outset.

thanks for all the replies , the reason for going for a HC would have been the rarity bit . as i know only too well that TVR power is not the same from car to car and that quoted power is not allways the same as actual power. at the end of the day the car was bloody good .......
