Spybot Search & Destroy is pretty good. To be on the safe side it is best to run Ad-Aware as well because they one picks up stuff the other dosent and vice versa.

No I recommend running them both. If you run both of them you will often find that they locate diffrent things. Most of the list of the things found are the same but not all.

he recommends adware though...

Also.. is the AVG antivirus any good.. as I still have norton running in the background and it pops up every now and then saying it has detected a virus but cant remove it..when I scan with AVG.. it finds nothing

One or the other. Running two anti-virus programs is not wise. NOR is running ANY Norton home product. Replace it with ZoneAlarm. Removing that should make your system feel a wee bit nippy.

AVG will catch 99% of nasties, worth remembering that the free version will only look for viruses, not spyware/malware... it's up to SpyBot & AdAware SE to nuke those and yes, you do want two pieces of software to hunt for them, you run them one after the other, because to be perfectly honest... marketing people are even more evil little shits than virus writers.

I used to be a fan of ZoneAlarm, but not anymore - seems quite bloated and blocked a few programs I use (e.g. torrents).

You should be fine with Windows Defender, Windows Firewall & AVG.

Control Panel - Add/Remove programs

Followed by Google to find an uninstaller that works! Norton/Symantec products don't like to let go...
