skyb/band.netgear router UPGRADE?????????

got sky,got free router(54mbps).mbps drop to 1mbps when downloading.ok get netgear rangemax(£129)reckoning better speed/range.now the problem is i can`t get this thing to install properly,ip address`s etc done allsorts but no go.
so can you only use the routers that sky give you,like are they locked somehow.the stack of routers that you see in all the shops must work on broadband networks,....or no they don`t.if say you look in pc world,would most of the routers they sell work with bt b/band,sky b/band??????? seems to me they don`t????cheers for any input/caput.Dave

Have you reset the router,waited to see if the router sees the broadband then reboot pc
