Hello Chim Chaps.

I have a couple of issues with my car.

Bit of history on the car first: it's a 1994 'L' 430 Big Valve, 47000 miles, full history, always looked after.

Now, when I am driving along at 30/40 in third or fourth, the car judders as if its missfiring, and kangaroos a bit. It does the same at 50 in 5th.
If i press the throttle just a little more, the juddering stops, but of course the car speeds up and isnt so legal.
If i put the car in 2nd, so its at about 2200rpm, there is no juddering.

Any ideas what that could be? Car runs great, doesnt sound like its missing.. except..

Other slight problem, is the car sometimes stalls. It's done it three times now, once after the drive home from picking it up - as i turned into my road - I stopped at the junction, went to pull away, and realized that the engine wasnt running.

Then, this morning at work, I parked up at 8:45ish, went in to work. came back out at 9:15, to move the car to another spot, and it started, but died straight away. I re-started it, and it lasted 2 'hunts' and then stalled again. Third time lucky, started it, and drove to the other car park without any problems.

So, am I driving like a twit, or does the car have some issues?

Cheers all.

-al.

Ah, also, the car ran hot today (but perfect yesterday!) - at about 95degs on the dial, I think. The number plate is attached to the front grille (For some reason) could the reduced air-flow affect the temp this much, or is there another problem?

Sorry for all the Q's.

Don't worry about the questions Alex, we've all asked lots and lots of people have answered and been very helpfull !!

I think they all tend to 'shunt' a bit now and again (thats my description of it). Sometimes when I lift off if i'm coming to a stop it won't be that smooth, the odd clunk and knock sound (not bad) and it sorts itself out. Think i'm probably in a high'ish gear and should change down a little earlier.

You could try cleaning the stepper motor out to sort out the stalling, they get clogged up with carbon and can play up at times, normally the first port of call.

Buy yourself a copy of Steve Heaths 'bible', lots of useful info on not only how to fix things but also potential issues and causes.

Nice model to have by the way !!

Thanks,

I've got the revision one of the bible, I really need to spend an evening reading it.

Shunting is probably a good word for it, but its pretty bad on my car. What is the stepper motor? - I am not shy of spanners, but not had much experience with TVR's.

Thanks for making me feel welcome, and the comment about the car. It makes good power, got a rolling road printout sitting here - 274.1 bhp and 309.1 lbft.

Are both your fans working?, a seized fan would cause a nice shunt on the electrics, which commonly makes the engine hesitate on these models.

Speed sensor for the ecu off the box, & air leaks would by my first ports of call.

Some of them tend to do this , especially the one's with high lift cams which you have .Check your connectors on the fuel pump behind the N/S/R wheel. Try some good injector cleaner as well. Check for arching of a spark under the bonnet best in darkness. Also try different fuels my 4.0HC ( much smoother on esso super than any other brand)did it this and there was nothing wrong with the car even used the plug in diagnostic black box . Better fuel mapping would probably sort the issue. But it can just be how the car is , mine was always at 1800rpm is but it was all good , new magnecor leads etc , and I was a mechanic before i changed to fixing boats .Best as said to get the bible and run through everything ,air leaks as well.
My 500 does hardly do any shunting , but is a little more uneven at 1800rpm after putting V power in this week , even that smoother on Esso. Again both cars constant throttle very light throttle .

Just went and had a look at the sparks in the dark - front of the left bank (while looking at the car's front) was making a blue spark - not too bad, but noticable. I've bodged the lead on properly for now, but will buy a new set on payday.

will check fuel pump connections asap but its dark by the time i get in from work. sigh.

its so bad my wife refuses to drive the car frown

Ha ha, no way, i'd much rather have a wife that lets me spunk money on cars, than one that resents it!

Rev 2 is twice the size and has a lot more information on engine faults. Worth upgrading. To be honest some shunting can be normal but it can be made worse by not changing down a gear or two. I don't drive in top in a 30 limit as it isn't that smooth. I change down and it is far more comfortable.

Mine shunts (griff 500) esp in too high a gear!

Assuming youve checked leads, sparkplugs, stepper motor, cleaned/checked all visible connections, earths, air filter and, as spendy type guy pointed out, checked for leaks (esp from AFM to plenum) oh, and you could try disconnecting the thin tube that runs from the top of the plenum to the vacuum advance thing on the side of the distributor. Oh, make very sure there are no hairline cracks on the inside if the dissycap-mine was new but came readyfitted with a nice hairline crack! ACT changed it pronto, good geezer that he is. This may all seem complicated but not really, just a pain!

If none of these sort it get a garage to check it out, doesnt have to be a "dealer".

Good luck, Dave.

After all those changes have you reset the ECU?

My 4.3 Griffith was a bit shunty when I first got it but an off-the-shelf Mark Adams Tornado chip cured all that and gave it a bit more oomph as well.

If you know any other 4.3 owners could you ask to try their ECU maybe.

Mine has a mark adams remap/chip.

Will try re-setting the ECU tomorrow afternoon.

Otherwise, to the garage with it! smile

This sounds just like the problems I had when I had my Chim & it turned out to be the stepper motor which is a very common issue. Take it out & give it a good clean with petrol & wire brush see http://www.tvrcc-south-wales.co.uk/stepper.asp
Or could be water temp sender see http://www.pistonheads.co.uk/gassing/topic.asp?h=0...

Cheers
H

Done both of those. Is there any way to test the stepper motor without replacing it?

Disconnect it & if it is not working you won't notice any difference in the way your car runs once connected car should run smoother (Doesn't do any harm so go for run with it disconnected)
