Knock Knock Knocking
Discussion
Damn unt Blast.
My S3 has gained a knocking sound. I'm thinking it's either the back left CV or the wheel bearing. I only get the knocking at high torque (ie: pulling away) - tho I think it's getting more persistent. Weirdly, it doesn't generally do it cold - I think the joint has to warm up.
Anyway - I've had a look in the parts list and I can't see it - does anyone know, are the CV's and wheel bearings (as part of the transmission) standard Ford parts ?
Thanks,
WG

Sounds like a CV - will probably happen more and more often. Relatively cheap and easy to replace.
I thought a CV was for a job
applications
seriously
i appear to be suffering from the same affliction
do you have to dismantle the whole rear wheel assembly or can it be done in situ without taking the drum off ? secondly is it 2 cv joints per side or one ?

I assume you've checked the wheel nuts are on tight
Err ... No actually !!
very good advice as i have just found out as 2 of my wheel nuts just fell off ! on the way home and the other 2 were loose !!
guess what?
tightened them up and the knocking noise went away
anyone know the correct torque for the wheel nuts

Jeepers That could have been nasty. Has the wobbly wheel done any damage to the hub?

hub seems ok but it did strip a bit of alloy of the wheels nice little shards of metal on the rim when i stopped
Just to fill in the end of the tale. The S went in to G&M Autos (TVR specialist) in Chiswick on tuesday. The passenger side driveshaft was taken out and both CVs replaced - very nice Mr Man there was a little nervous we might replace the wrong side as the knocking had of course stopped. So far fingers crossed it hasn't started again. Total cost was 3 hours labour plus parts (standard Ford bits) and VAT which came to about £340 - which I didn't think was too bad - particularly as he safety checked the car ready for driving in france.
Shame it wasn't the wheel nuts though ...

btw - torque wheel nuts to 80/85 ft/lbs.
Hmmm - you're telling me I need to buy a torque wrench aren't you ? I notice there are lots on ebay - is there any particular design or make that you chaps would recommend ?
Thanks,
WG
Naa.. 90 is about "ee thats tight enough" with a standard wrench.
Cheers
Matt.
