I'm trying to find out some information for a report I'm doing and was wondering if anyone had any ideas. The point of the report is to discover whether it's possible to cycle into Glasgow faster than you can drive in. For those of you who commute into Glasgow every morning I'm sure you are aware that the trip along the M8 can take up to an hour on really bad days. I'm looking for information from cyclists about how fast you could get into Glasgow from say Wishaw or Airdrie. I know this isn't the best place to ask but even if you have links to another forum then that would be great....

Cheers!!

Hello Andrew.

I cycle into work everyday. I go from Knightswood to Partick (Glasgow uni) everyday.

I travel by the canal system, as the roads are to stressful. I don't know if it would be quicker than driving there. But it’s defiantly quicker than driving then looking for parking space if you’re after 8.30am!

Hope that helps

I used to commute from kelvingrove to Tesco on argyle street. It took 20-25 minutes. It worked out around 10 minutes faster than the bus. I didnt have a car at that time but it would have taken slightly longer than the bus due to having to find a place to park.

i rode through Aberdeen for near 10 years (stay in the sticks now), christ even walking was quicker in some cases. Seriously!
In rush hour the bike was always quicker, hands down. Other times of day evens out, on Fridays i was always first to the pub from Altens to the Ferryhill. Years ago as a student i was quicker from BoD to Garthdee than the car, tried that against my flat mates a few times That was 6 miles across town. Conditions do vary locally as well as there is a general prevailing wind, it can be an utter killer beside the coast.

I rode from Insch to my office in Inverurie a lot in the summer, quickest time in was 21 minutes which aint much slower than the car BUT there is typically a big tailwind in the morn and a huge headwind on the way home. So much more noticeable in exposed areas.

Point is you can beat a car. but you don't want to arrive a gasping sweaty mess before your day has started.

If I go along great western road FLAT OUT I can do the journey in 15 mins but with the pleasnt route at a sedate pace it takes about 25mins.

This is more of an experiment to see whether it is possible. Idealy I want to get someone of competition standard at cycling and see if they can beat a car during rush hour. What I need to find out is a good route from somewhere in North Lanarkshire....

My MAD mate cycles from Bearsden where he lives to Coatbridge (Monklands hospital) where he works.
He travels through Kirkintilloch through golf courses, foot paths and along the canal system.
I think he is off his head but he tells me he can make it in 1hr 20mins.
If you need any more details I will ask him his exact route.

Is this a project for your own interest or a some sort of funded research project?

You do know we have a pedal powered forum?

That does indeed sound MAD! As a one off it would be a lot of fun but everyday would be hard work. If you could get the route that would be great! Any idea how long it would take him to drive it at rush hour?
