I've got a hole in my exhaust and dont really enjoy sounding like a chav in a diesel!!
I had a quick look under and from what I can see the hole is in the back box, but not sure on the state of the rest of the system.
What sort of price would I be looking at for just replacing the back box up to the cost of a new exhaust system if the whole thing is caput??

It's a '99 fiesta.

How big is the hole? If it's not too big you could buy some evostik stuff (I can't remember what it's called, but it makes claims about setting as hard as steel), it's in the section for "liquid metal" type stuff in Halfrauds and use that to plug the hole. It's lasted about 6 months for me so far and passed an MOT with it.

It sounds like it's got bigger recently.
Hopefully the rest of the system is still ok and it's just the back box.

Be warned, I had the downpipe on my car go while I was driving, up to then I'd been thinking I should sort out the annoying exhaust leak that was getting louder but the end of the downpipe had fractured causing the leak and when it went I had to bodge things a bit to stop the rest of the system dragging along the ground. The following 40 odd miles were quite loud, with no silencing and the exhaust exiting just to the side of my feet! Loud enough to make the rear view mirror vibrate anyway. If the leak is as big as it sounds like it is you should be able to find it by listening to roughly where it's loudest and then passing your hand around the pipe and silencer(s), without actually touching them, and you'll feel where the leak is. They usually go at the welds between the pipe and the silencer.

I'm afraid I can't really give you any ideas about paying someone to do it as I do most of the work on my car myself (bar welding).

I went to a local garage with a 1.25L Zetec S. The hole was in the centre section and the rear and centre were replaced for about £120 (including labor).

She's at the doctors as i type wink

Looks like a nice place and I even got a free brew and lift home (could take a while as I'm having some other work done too). They're going to hopefully just to the back box which would be around £30, so fingers crossed!
