Dear All,

Never posted here before, so hi!

I am very interested in ordering the new GT-R, but am not sure the best way to go about it as Auto Express said recently the price when launched in Japan will start at around £32K but I have read elsewhere that the price for UK will be £50-£60K.

I am in no doubt it will as always be more expensive in the UK, but this sort of a difference would certainly make me import one. Who is the best most recognised importer for such cars - someone that can be trusted!

Thanks for the advice.

Regards
Rob

I would guess Litchfield will be importing them as soon as they're available as it seems they're usually amongst the first to get the new JDM cars. A well recognised and respected company too (regularly in Evo magazine).

I have no personal experience of the company though, so just a suggestion.

My mate works for a Nissan Dealership - he told me he could put my name on a list in March - there are no official lists before that, but you could put in a letter of intent i suppose.

prices are 55-60k here.

I'm betting insurance will be a bitch though.

No official cars until 1st Q of 2009 though.

Ring middlehurst nissan, place 1k refundable deposit there and then, it's really that simple.
If anyone is likely to get them, it's middlehurst being as they were the sole dealers of UK GTR's previously, and have extensive history with them.

As for importing one from Japan, easily do-able through the likes of newera etc

60 or so deposits taken already for the new GTR last time I looked. This doesn't mean anything in reality as nothing is guarenteed at this stage, but as mentioned they are totally refundable.
and for what it's worth there's not really any better source of accurate information than the GTR owners club.

and more specifically for the new one...

Well seeing as if you placed a deposit on one today in Japan you wouldn't get it until April. I would not be confident that they could turn one round in 6 months.
Im just trying to find the exact quote but some of the GTROC memebers went over for the 'invite only' showing of the car before the Tokyo show and the 2009 line was what they have been told directly.

Thanks for all the advice.

I spoke to Middlehurst this morning and was told they were estimating the price to be £55-£60K, which I think is realistic, but when I mentioned that as this is nearly 50% more than Japan, hence you would be more likely to import, was told that by the time all the additional costs had been put in place, importing one would be more expensive.... Find that hard to believe.

Sounds like the options are either put up with the UK price or wait until closer to the time and look at the import options, as not sure putting any money down for an import would be such a good idea at this early stage.

no - the esva can be very costly to do if Nissan want it to be...

well for starters you'll have VAT, import duty and the like to pay, ESVA test (not sure when the model report will be available?)

A quick back-of-a-napkin breakdown would be (using XE.com rates for today, you wont get rates as good from your bank obviously)...

Base Model: 7,770,000 yen for base model 32,860.15 pounds

Premium Edition: 8,347,500 35,309.38 pounds

Black Edition: 7,927,500 yen for the Black edition 33,530.61 pounds

So using the premium as an example, you're looking at the following costs:

Car cost FOB: 35,500,00 (as an example)
SHIPPING (w/ insurance): 850 pounds
IMPORT DUTY (10%): 3635 pounds (taking us to 39,985 so far, so 40k)
VAT (17.5% of the FOB cost+Shipping+import duty): 6,997.38 pounds

So there's 46,982 pounds or thereabouts (without taking Japanese exporters fees into consideration) , so stick on 250 quid or so for shipping Agent's fee, 50 quid or so for customs fees,
ESVA test with model report should stand you about 500 quid to get it all above board and correct assuming you can get access to a model report*, another hundred quid to register it, get the plates and so on, and of course the obligitory 180 quid for a year's tax.

  • Don't expect the model report to be easily accessed just yet, I'm sure Nissan are keen to avoid grey importing ahead of their UK launch though this is speculation I suppose.
So to summarise, just from the above we've got a grand total of 48,062 before you've paid your japanese exporter for their services, and without doubt a few costs missing, so I'd expect somewhere around the 50 grand mark to be a fair assumption for a brand new premium model JDM spec to be bought and on the road in the UK.
Bear in mind for the prices I calculated I used XE.com market rates. Where they'll offer you say 222 JPY to the pound, banks will generally offer something like 215 as an example, so this of course affects the overall cost too.

Factor in you'll have a JDM car with JDM carwings GPS system / sat nav, MFD screen, heavier depreciation, and the like and it soon becomes less appealing.

Not trying to put you off in any way, just trying to give you a vague idea of the costs involved if you weren't already aware of them.

HTH,
Cheers
stu

Dear Stu,

Perfect. This is very helpful and exactly what I was looking for, as I have no experience at all with importing. On this basis and for ease the UK cars are more appealing.

Thanks for your help!

Kind regards,
Rob

Forgot to post. I ordered one through Middlehurst in November(or at least put a deposit down for the waiting list!).

Shame the press are now saying March 09, I was hoping for latter part of 08. Sure its worth the wait!
