looks like we all need a new one for next season..

They are now mandating FIA approved rain lights... for some reason.

so thats 85 quid for about 20p of plastic and a couple of LED's mmm i wonder what the FIA and the MSA's cut of that is...

maybe they could use Mclarens fine to give us all one hehe

I used one of these on my Westfield in the NSSCC a couple of years ago... they're about £8.50+VAT from Maplin (or £48.90+VAT from Demon Tweeks !!!!).

I also noticed that Audi had exactly the same light on their Le Mans winning R8's a couple of years ago in the paddock at Goodwood FOS. So I assume from that that the FIA and MSA approve. Its 52mm in diameter.... haven't got my blue book to hand to check if this is relevant ?

The reading of the reg seems to be to replace the existing rain light, ie one within 10cm of the centreline or, on cars with fully enclosed bodywork, to mounted symmetrically.

If they are mounted behind an enclosure eg in a similar fashion to the Fiesta rear lights on a chimmy, who's to know if they have a Maplin or FIA logo on?

You will never use a rain light if it starts to rain IN a race as opposed to from the start - way to much going on - you never even think about it.....

Just for scruntineering!

If I have time to switch my lights on when I am coming up to lap people, I have time to switch them on if visibility is poor. That said if the rain gets that bad mid race then on slicks we'll probably all be parked up in a tyre barrier

Besides, its pointless arguing the toss: if the regs say you have to have them, you have to have them. Or don't race.

I've been pulled twice at scrutineering during the season. At Snett last week I had a scrutineering audit!!!!by a new, young and extremely astute young lady who checked amongst other details, the security of my pedals, the non return valve in my tank and my rain light (which is new as I was warned) in the middle.

I think we've got away with it before as we have side fog lights and I don't think our regs specified it.

Anyway as previously stated it costs about £10.

Woth it versus an early bath!

Hold Fast lads, the FIA and the MSA have backtracked on this so nothing will change untill at least jan 2009, so we should be fine with our existing setups, but as always I'd double check th blue book for the existing regs as I suspect they may be enforced a little more closely as the issue has been raised.

the relavant sections are

J 20.14.8
and

Q5 ((Now C(c)) 69 - 71 in the 2008 edition)

The trouble is some series will now be specifying it in their 2008 regs and the scrutiners will start to get confused. My view, as already done, a light in the number plate box is a simple and cheap fix and means no debate.

If it's just the one then within 10cm of the centre line of the car. Essentially the width of the numberplate, but dont put it where the numberplate goes cos a series sponsor may want that space.
