I'm having a bunch of issues with the wireless back at home, and I'm wondering if the problems are likely to be Vista or the BT ADSL router.

In the house we've got 3 laptops, as well as a PSP and a Nokia 770.

The Vista laptop will regularly loose its connection (IE or Firefox won't connect), but what makes that weird is that some apps will retain the connection (uTorrent being the main one).

The rest of the machines in the place are generally fine on their connection and don't tend to experience any problems.

Suggestions?

I've had problems in the past with utorrent hogging all the network resource so that other apps (IE, firefox etc) appear to have lost the network.

Give torrents a rest for a few days, I bet it settles down.

When I used to have utorrent going, it drained all the connection and I couldn't log into MSN etc... as they couldn't connect.

If you google Optimising utorrent or similar, you'll notice that they suggest setting the download rate at about 90% of your max and similar for the upload so that the computer can still be used/ updates downloaded/ infomation sent and recieced etc.. With this set up correctly you should be able to use the internet (if not slowly) while utorrent is running and everything should be able to connect fine.

I really doubt its uTorrent thats just hogging the bandwidth - even on the occasion when its not running, I'll just lose all connectivity to the router - I can't even ping the blighter.

Welcome to the world of Vista and Wireless problems!

Ive just managed to get my new Dell to work reliably on my home wireless. It involved rolling back to an older driver but it seems to have fixed it now.

A reboot often (not always) fixes it, sometimes the router needs a reboot as well ....

I've got the same problem with my MacBook Pro, under both Vista and OSX. Works fine for ages, but if I try to copy a lot of stuff across the wireless then it keels over. My old Vaio can copy the same stuff over (under Vista and XP) without any problem. The bit I haven't worked out with the MBP is why it sometimes stalls the wireless connection on the router too.

I'd check for updated drivers for the wireless card on the laptop for Vista, and if you're using the 3rd party connection application try using the built in windows stuff instead. Also try and see if theres an updated firmware for the router.

Is it Atheros card ? If so then welcome to their hardware problem club.

I've been through the driver updates on the laptop - everythings up to date.

Have tried on the router, but my housemates lost the password info required to get onto it to perform the updates.

An up to date driver might not be that helpful. Again, if this in an Atheros card then the best driver on my machine I have found is the original MS one that came with Vista. The newer ones all have problems.
