As you know I bought one of these to bung in my pocket... but have been having a go at the amount of noise, even in fairly bright conditions.

I know some here are thinking of buying one, so as I've mentioned on other threads.

Good points: Small, light, sexy, images look great on the large viewscreen, piss easy to use, very good battery life, good metering.

Bad points: noise - above 400 ISO it's a bit of a joke, and in video mode the mic pics up a bit of mechanical noise. Flash isn't really powerful enough.

I just popped out and took this - to demonstrate that for the web, it's fine, but I think the noise would make printing a little dissapointing. Pics belpow resized and a 1:1 crop

ETA: I know it's a daft comparison, but here's a 1:1 from the D2X (which as people keep pointing out is a bit noisy!) I'm probably just expecting too much from a point & shoot.

Its probley due to the fact it only has a very small sensor, as it is only a compact.

If you have photoshop, try the noise ninja plug in.

I guess it depends what you want it for.

Bought one recently to replace a dead Ixus for family snaps and have been pleased with the results but then I'm not looking to be as critical as some of the pro and semi-pro photographers on here.

One gripe I do have is that it's tricky to use one-handed (which is often necessary with small kiddywinks around!) as there's nowhere "safe" for your right thumb to rest on the back of the camera...

+1 for noise ninja or neat image plug ins

Both have managed to save shots I otherwise would've binned.

I was one of the ones interested, so thanks Steve.

I'm just looking for a compact to use when the SLR isn't be convenient. Could have used it in the Bahamas a few weeks ago actually.

I brought 'Amateur Photographer' tother day because the camera was on the front. They gave it 80% out of 100%.
Conclusion being that the cameras specification shows slight improvement over the older R6 but nothing major.
An extra 10 shots on battery life, but as you've said before, the battery life is strong.
Also that the extra mega pixel will make little difference to the size of reproduction. Going on to say that they wouldn't want to print many pictures much larger than A4, except on the odd occasion.
Then as expected, noise was mentioned a few times.

But I guess a run through Photoshop could help with the noise problem?

May I ask what it's like at 200mm? I'm tempted because of extra 100mm or so zoom when compared to most.

Also looking at the Canon Ixus models.

Steve, has yours locked up and gone funny when turning it on or off yet?

Just got back from up your way (fort william actually, not Avimore) and the bloody thing kept going funny when it opened, or it got stuck half open.

Worked occasionally and I got about 10 shots off in the whole 3 days! furious

That twinned with my mates brother going to work with my camera in his boot (D200) meant we were stuffed with getting the "memories" shots on our blinking camers phones frown

Can't say I'm hugely impressed with the R7. Fill flash doesn't seem to work at all.............flash set to off and it exposes fine, set to auto and in reasonable light you just get a black shot with a few tiny low-lights. Very annoying! (did have it set to asa64 though)

no, mine is behaving itself (so far). The on/off lens thing does feel a bit flimsey though.

The bad news: I bought an R6 for my daughter back in the summer and after only
about 2 months the lens developed a mind of its own each time the camera was switched on;
it would come out and then retract back into its housing repeating the procedure until it would jam half way in/out !

The good news; I sent it back to Ricoh who fixed it very very quickly;
far better service than I have had from almost any other camera manufacturer.
