Right!

I had 4 new tyres fitted to the Mondeo 4 weeks ago. They were the standard size for the Zetec S 225/40/R18 IIRC.

Since they have been fitted I have been getting a 'wobble' from the back end. Wobble is maybe not the right word because it is not sideways, it is up and down. It feels like the tyre is either not round or the wheel is not balanced correctly and you only feel the vibration at motorway speeds. This problem did not exsist before the fitting of the new tyres.

I thought the balancing was the problem at first and have therefore had the wheels re-balanced a further four times, without success - what the hell can it be???

When the wheels were re-balanced (by a different garage to the one that fitted the tyres) they said that the wheel rims were not bent so I've ruled this out - can tyres be anything but round??????

It's driving me up the piggin wall now so any advice greatly welcome!

question: when you had the wheels re-balanced did the garage remove all weights to check the true balance?

tyres have a shelf life and the sidewalls do become weaker as time goes by.
it is possible that 1 tyre is out of shape.
get the front wheels put on the back and the back on the front to rule out the wheels. if the wobble moves to the front then you know its the wheels causing the problem.
another possibilty is that they have not been balanced correctly.

As Mpower says tyres can become distorted particularly if they have been stacked very high and the tyres at the bottom go out of shape though this is less likely with 18's as the sidewall is so strong,it should be easy to tell with the car on a ramp or wheels on the balancer as the up and down throw will be apparent when looking from the side. Are they balancing to 0 grams?

good idea, just so you can prove its definately the wheels and not an unlikely coincidence that something else broke at the same time.

It wont be wheel balancing at fault if youve had it done several times. has to be either the rim itself or a defective tyre, perhaps a manufacturing fault that has caused a slight ovality or flat patch ??? sounds mad, but it would have to be. Swap the wheels, and if that proves conclusive then go back and ask them to change them.

strange problem, has to be a defective tyre or bent rim or not balanced right.
