Hi, I have the opportunity to purchase a 5.7 litre Chevy engine with a G50 Gearbox which I intend to use for my proposed Ultima build. Being new to this world of high HP Chevy engines (I'm used to 70HP max), can any one tell me how I can age an engine,I'm told that it is a 350 block with the numbers 3970010 on the side?
Second question; the G50 box, should there be any numbers I should be looking for and are there different versions.
If neither of these are suitable please advise.

If that is the casting number then it could be three different engines.

302ci...1969...2 bolt main bearing...Z-28 Camero
327ci...1969...2 main
350ci...69-80...2 or 4 main

Try looking for a number stamped into the top face of the block but visible beside the head. also look for any other casting markings on both the block and the heads.

To find the number for the 'box you need to look for it stamped on a machined flange on the top (or the bottom if its in an Ultima)

Hi David

Your engine could be a 302,327 or 350 and the 397010 refers to all 350 blocks built between 1969 and 1980 and could have 2 or 4 bolt main caps.

As for the G50 here is some info:

1987 911 G50s have an 8 digit code stamped in the bottom, for example 'G50/0073H'_'12/00050'

  • G50/00 = G50 trans
  • 7 = trans for 6 cylinder
  • 3 = 5-speed Rest of World; 4= 5-speed USA/Japan/M298)
  • H = 1987 model
  • 00050 = serial number
A 1988-89 trans has a 12 digit code, such as 'G5000 1 J 00903'

  • G5000 = trans type (see below)
  • 1 = normal differential (0= no diff, 2= ZF ltd. slip diff)
  • J = 1988 model (K= 1989)
  • 00903 = serial number
Transmission types:

  • G50/00 = 911 Carrera, R.o.W.
  • G50/01 = 911 Carrera, USA/CND/J/AUS
  • G50/02 = 911 Switzerland (very short gear ratios)
  • G50/50 = 911 Turbo world wide, 1989 only
  • G50/52 = later Porsche turbo boxes ZF ltd. slip

You may be right...It's been a long day. Aquaplaned to Exeter kitcar show and back. Think I had better order some new rears.

Hi Guy's,
I am even more confused, please put me out of my misery!
The numbers on the engine other than 3970010 on the side, appear to be 010.020.164 and on the heads its got Brodix.
As for the gearbox it has G50134770052 stamped on it, do either of these make sense and are they usable?

Hi Guy's, I hope this works, I have attached a link to some photographs of the box in question.
Does anyone recognise it and will it be suitable for my proposed GTR?

Nice try but the link returns 'This gallery is private'.
There may be a 'share gallery' option you can tick.

According to my sources, it's a late 930 4 speed 78-88 with a nasty paint job.
