I've got a Compact Flash reader (USB) that I've been using under XP for years. I just plugged it in and it recognised it without the need for new drivers etc.

Under Vista every time I plug it in it tries to install a device driver. It takes about 5 minutes, then says it's ready to use. It doesn't show up as an extra drive though.

I can find plenty of people having similar problems when Googling but I've not found a solution. Can anyone shed any light on this?

It's not something simple like a drive letter allocation problem is it?

He could be onto something there... What does device manager say?

Right click Computer > Manage >Storage > Disk management.

I've had this before with USB storage when it wants a spare drive letter lower than F:

Try some different USB ports? I tried that with a card reader one time and it made a difference.

I splashed out £6 on a Vista compatible reader in the end. Seemed easier smile
