Being posted with some self interest in mind, as the Scottish Sprint and Hillclimb Championships have their awards dinner in Pitlochry this weeekend (24/25 November), but of interest to anyone on the A9 in the near future I suspect.

We had the following advice from the hotel

"The Ballinluig junction on the A9 is undergoing major road works at the moment and on 24th & 25th November there will be temporary traffic lights in place. There are major delays predicted"

A kind hearted fellow PHer biggrin told me when advised of this by email that it had taken him 1.5 hours to get throught this on Saturday just gone (probably swearing at me under his breath for not warning him earlier ..) - You have been warned!!

From the South, Perth up through Blairgowrie, left at Bridge of Cally through Kirkmichael and into Pitlochry. Nice road.
When you reach Pitlochry the welcoming fire at http://www.moulinhotel.co.uk/
is worth a visit.
Thats a bit of a detour! a fantastic road though!
An easier way is to turn left off A9 about 2 miles north of dunkeld just before the big bridge. Follow the small windy road (about 8miles?)until you come out the trees and see a signpost to turn right for ballinluig. You may get held up a bit once you get to ballinluig but will be quicker than heading up A9.
Col.
there are another few 'locals' roads that totally avoid the area but you would get very lost very easily if 'your not from 'round these parts!'

Yup, drove that way a just over a week ago and it was a nightmare. Came back to Edinburgh via Aberdeen - which has some ferocious roadworks at approach to Dundee Kinsgway - and the right-turn short-cut from the A-90 has been closed!

If you're going Aberdeen to Edinburgh and want to avoid Dundee (and why wouldn't you? wink), turn off at Forfar (where McDonalds is), and follow signs for Coupar Angus, then you can go from there straight to Perth, takes about 45 minutes. And there's plenty of overtaking opportunities!

yes my favourite route at all times - a great road, loads of people to overtake and loads of places in which to do it!! And a good friendly bacon butty van at Coupar too!!

When I lived in Aberdeen my folks lived near Invergordon. Rather than the A-96 I used to head out towards Ballater, then over by the Lecht, Granton on Spey, out onto the A9 and blast up to Invergordon on the (mostly) dual carrigeways.

Best time ever: a shade over 2:15 in the 20v quattro on a summer's Sunday morning around 1996. Still dream about that drive.....aaahhhhhhhh!
