UPDATE: You can donate here: http://www.justgiving.com/phersforheadley

From this thread:
http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...

I've accidentally volunteered myself to organise a collection for some sort of Christmas gift for the boys (and girls) residing at Headley Court.

Reply here if you're interested in donating and also suggest (a) suitable gift(s). One suggestion was a keg of beer (but that was if I took a present alone). If this turns into a big PH thing, then there would be more funds for a bigger gift. Anyway, sign your name here and also PM me an amount you would donate (Subject: Headley Court, as it might go to spam). In the meantime, I will find out if they are allowed to accept presents including alcoholic ones.

Thanks. smile

Good on you,Sir. I'll stick a few quid in for anything PH feels would be good.

Oops. Missed the bit about the suggested e-mail title. Let me know if you don't get it. It was sent as 'donation' . Soz

Darren - If the guys who went down to Dorking for the planning meeting over Grays Lane are anything to go by then I don't know whether they are allowed to drink, but me they certainly can!!! laugh The more correct answer to the question is that it entirely depends on their medical regime at the time. Some of them are there for 2-3 years, so they're not going to tell them they can't have a beer for that long.

The way those guys cope with the loss of limbs is nothing short of amazing... they deserve all the support they can get. I'd be delighted to help you out with any logistics if you wish. I'll email you on the donations front!

I like the sound of that Mal.

In America they have a charity called "Child's Play", where childrens wards from various hospitals create an Amazon wishlist, and the money raised by the charity is used to buy things from the list (includes books, dvds and games).

Maybe Headley Court could set one up (I'm sure they could do with a few books and things) and the money could be used for that?

there is a special charity which has been set up which is currenty trying to raise 5 million for a dedicated swimming pool and therapy treatment centre for the disabled serviceman's exclusive use. lets all try and give what we can to help them do that so they don't have to put up with this sort of crass behaviour in future.

That is a good idea, along the lines of the Richard Hammond episode. Imagine if PH could raise similar amount here.....!

How amazing would that be!

It is shameful that the charity has to try to raise the money for this. It is a basic requirement that should be provided by the MOD. It probably is a tenth the cost of a smart bomb to try to get the injured rehabilitated but it would appear the services are just expendale.

They should try to track this woman down and expose her for the crass insensative dimwit she is.

Definately worth supporting that but (imo) it would also be nice to send the soldiers currently there something a bit more personal (e.g. beer/dvds/wotever) and show that there are members of the public who will go to extra lengths to say thank you for their service to us. Maybe split donations 50:50 or however is appropriate?

Just had a look around that site and they have a Just Giving site which makes supporting the appeal very easy.

That is why I wanted to drive over and deliver a gift, rather than donating anonymously to a nationwide fund. (I also was thinking of offering my therapy services FOC, perhaps teaching them to meditate or something, for an afternoon or two, just because, but I am not sure such people are into that sort of thing!)

How about everyone PMs me the amount they intend to donate. Once I have a total sum, we can all decide how much to spend on a present and then give the rest to that fund?

I agree. It would be great if everyone could donate to the swimming pool fund, but equally great to provide a few Christmas presents, even if only to show that the selfish fools are a tiny minority.

Send a parcel to a hero:

Instructions for Soldiers Surprise Supplies

Please send items that do not melt -- it is very hot

For example:

non-chocolate biscuits
gingerbread or malt loaf
flapjacks
anything in a tube, vacuum packed or tinned (toffee sauce, condensed milk, salsa dips)
cheese straws
cream cheese
fish paste
chutneys
chorizo sausages or dried meat
dried fruit and nuts
mint imperials
chewing gum
Haribo, Jelly Babies, etc.
Soduko books
Nuts, Zoo and FHM magazines
They have to drink vast quantities of water -- so any powder flavourings in a package like Berocca, Vitamin C sachets etc
pick ‘n mix sweets

I am sure there is much more – so just use your imagination!

ALCOHOL AND PORN IS NOT PERMITTED!!!

Please do write an encouraging message on a card, but please sign your card by Christian name only and do not give your address as we do not want any obligation regarding thank-you letters.

The easiest method of sending these parcels is to use a large padded envelope but any form of parcel is fine, as long as it does not exceed 2 kilos. They are very strict on this! Tape it up firmly and write one of the following addresses clearly on a label :

A British Soldier
c/o J I Branch
HQ MND (SE)
Op Telic
BFPO 641

OR

A British Soldier
c/o Capt S Beattie MBE SO3 J I
HQ Task Force Helmand
Lashkar Gar
BFPO 715

Take the parcel to a post office. Parcels generally take about 5 days. THANK YOU!!!

A cunning plan, although I would suggest you put in regular updates with the running total so that people get caught up in the momentum!

Will do. I think hourly updates might be a bit OTT, though, so if I remember, I'll post a total before I bugger off to bed.

From the news I heard today, I suspect they'd equally be pleased to receive gifts such as SA80s, kevlar jackets and grenades... :/
