Thinking of buying a Gallardo

Hi All,

I've had the new Noble on order for so long now that other cars are beginning to look attractive.

So - with, say £80,000 to spend and, say 8K miles a year.

Any advice very much appreciated.

I suppose at 8k miles a year this will be a daily driver? If so, you won't go far wrong with a G. Had mine 6 months and still look forward to the drive to work. 4WD make it almost sensible for the winter, in the wet it feels so planted compared to Ferraris i have driven. Running costs not ridiculous, some parts can be like brake pads, but most can be sourced and fitted by a good indie at a fraction of the cost.
You will be looking at an 04 car for that money, although i don't see too many for sale right now.

Pretty much a daily drive (sometimes use bigger car or land rover with kids at the weekend or if the weather's really sh1te).

Hi N2H,

Went from 18months of 2.5l Nobility to 360 to G Spyder. Still fondly remember the noble, used to make the trip to the factory on a very regular basis for servicing (5 times if not 6 I think it was!). Certainly the service from Lambo Manchester is on a par in terms of help, advice & friendliness. Am sure you wouldn't regret the switch

I've had mine for nearly 2 years now and would highly suggest one. If its being driven everyday it would be fine as long as its serviced regularly and you watch the speed cameras . The only 2 problems are : tiny boot and be careful where you park it, theres always someone who wants to scratch a nice car. But other than that my advice is go for one, trust me you will love it.

Why not get an R8. It may be possible to get one at 80k. It will also be cheaper to run than both the noble and lambo. Well I think so anyway (service upto every 16k miles) Forgot to ask about the clutch though. I know of a dealer selling a silver demonstrator at list in jan/feb time with carbon blades i think it was. Also know of another at 90 ish thou though its with poverty spec and not worth the money in my book.

Fair enough gallardo is a good choice. Havent owned or even driven one but they are stunning looking and sounding cars and you are going in after depreciation so you wont lose too much other than the maintenance. I can only re iterate what everyone says which is get the best one you can afford/ newest model as any glitches should be ironed out.

Nick. A Gallardo will cost a damn sight more to run than a Noble so be sure about your numbers.

I know I'm ploughing a well trodden furrow here (not quite sure where the farming reference has come from!) but don't lose sight of the fact that you'll be buying a £120/£130K car, not a £40K one ( or an £80K one for that matter). You'd be amazed (or not) by how many people think they're buying an £80K car just because they've paid £80K for it.

Alternatives are obviously a 360 Modena or high end 911 (Turbo most like a G if you like your cars ultra grippy, but a bit inert compared to a GT3).

It may feel like there are a million Gallardos out there but in reality there are only about 500 or so.

Insurance depends on a lot but I pay £1800 for 8000 miles a year and 9 points (now down to 6. Hurrah!). I know you can spend less (especially if you cut the miles down) but in my experience you get less cover as well.

Servicing is around £1000 for oil and filter (every 7500 miles) and £2000 for all plugs, most fluids, filters and oil every 15000 miles. Expect to pay around £5K for a 15000 mile service and clutch replacement (my clutch is still good after 17000 miles but NEO's has finally been replaced after 40000 miles). Front pads are £900 an axle from a dealer, and discs about the same.

You'll need a set of rear tyres every year, and a set of fronts every 2/3 years depending on the way you drive. Bizarrely, the Gallardo doesn't eat it's fronts the way you'd expect front something that can carry so much entry speed. Budget £350 for fronts and £530 for rears. It doesn't make much difference, price-wise, wether you stick with Pirellis or head off down the Michelin path.

Oh... and Gallardo's DO NOT eat clutches. A worn clutch is a sign of abuse/poor driving. Anyone who's actually owned a Gallardo for more than 2 weeks will tells you this, so don't listen to the panic merchants.

Nicky this is why i suggested the R8. The argument for and why I have an order for one is simply due to running costs/depreciation. As i said in my earlier post if you are going to get a used g dep will have been taken care of to a large extent but its the running costs that are the pig on them and usefully are also i think what makes them exclusive.

The R will cost you bugger all to run due to its intermittent servicing upto iirc 16000 mile between services. I wont deny that I havent actually asked what it will cost to service but i expect somewhere iro 2-600 quid for a general service depending on which dealer you go to.

As for engine noise Ok its not loud like the g but that is easily corrected with a new exhaust system in which case you could make it as loud as you like.

Passion wise is its failing to a degree. Some like myself think its got great styling others dont whereas the g seems to have cornered the market in the look at me stakes.I am not overly fussed by the gs styling inside as all the switchgear is audi sourced so pretty much same old same old. At the end of the day it really is up to you to decide whether you want passion and huge maintenance bills or not.

I would suggest trying out both a gallardo and an R8 to see how you feel about both then weigh your options.

Coming from a Noble, which is a game of spot the ford parts bin items, I doubt that would be an issue!

You're right don't much care about the interior though nicer is, well, nicer isn't it!

It's all about the driving experience.

So far only the 997GT3RS has come close, frankly the 360 was boring. Must organise a drive in the G.

That's a licence to print money, nothing less.

The odd thing is, I could justify spending the money to actually buy the car, but I couldn't, no matter how you slice it, justify the likes of £1k for oil & a filter
