Anyhow, When turning Left the steering goes really stiff and it feels as if there is no PAS.
Ive checked the oil and its ok.
I have had a new steering rack recently and had the wheels Geometry set up.
Tyres ok (new) and it turns Right Ok.
Any Ideas Peeps

It's probably the UJ in the steering column behind the OSF wheel. Just soak in penetrating oil as a temporary fix and then replace it with a new one.
Mike.
Thanks Mike
It all looks ok there and well greased also. if this had gone wouldnt you get some play inthe steering and stiff stearing when turning the whell in both directions.

Cheers Peter will check again as it looked ok, but was plastered in Grease, ho hum..
In what way do they give up, do they break, misshape, wear out??
And if it is the top Uj are these TVR specific or of the Cavalier, its A 96 with PAS

Hi B.B
Here is another thought, a few years ago a friend had a 2.8i Capri with the same symptons you are describing. Turns out (on the Ford rack) that there is a small nut or screw (I can't remember which he said) that must be a bias valve on the rack itself. By adjusting this you could alter the amount of power assistance to each side. Only now this 'cos it happened to my grandfathers 2.3 granada too. He got rid of it though before we had a chance to try it on his.
Maybe worth exploring the possibility

When mine have failed (three times now, before I added the gator), they looked moderately OK from outside but when taken off the vehicle you could feel the joint seizing when moved by hand. Moving by hand, the resistance was very variable, it would feel fine for a bit and then go almost solid again. I imagined that the internal bearing surfaces had worn/corroded and there were bits floating around inside, but I didn't take them apart to confirm this. I believe it's a TVR special made from bits of other standard UJs - so only available via TVR dealers.

Is there anyway of checking it while still on the car, It has new bolts through it as the Steering rack has been changed under INs and if this was a duffer then i owuld of thought that would have been changed also.
Dont want to waste £40 on new UJ if it might not be that, but must admit it does look likely.
