Many will be aware that I had a problem with my battery at Pistonfest.

I now know what caused it and it was a silly mistake easily done.

Basically I was fitting the engine on the Saturday and as I was supposed to be there in the morning I was rushing to finish... After five attempts to get the gearbox on I finally managed to finish at 8:30pm and I left for Pistonfest at 9:30pm.
Yes I am mad, and apart from a minor leak from the gearbox breather that I had damaged on installation all was OK...... However on arrising from sleeping in the car overnight (mad I know) I found the battery was dead.
The car was very dificult to jump as it needs power to run the MSD unit.
I now know that when the Red top batterys are run flat they have to be sent away to be recovered so I purchased a new battery from the factory.

On installation this went flat also...... and I eventually traced the fault to...... the alternator. I had fitted the two wires on the side the wrong way around.. The alternator was working fine with no warning lights and was pushing a charge as I was running the car on it and it did put a very small amount into the battery (short lived though)

Small mistake major hasle and cost me dearly in both cash and red face!

Bewarned don't make this mistake!

By the way the new battery from the factory is less than half the weight and size.... I must say I didn't think it would even turn the car over.

However it has worked impecably despite being fully discharged (these ones are recoverable) and running my car along with the stereo, road angel etc....

It's the same money as well.....

That is very similar to the problem l had with the same result that the RedTop battery was run down and is now useless. ln my case the alternator had dropped when one of the bolts had sheared and the alternator then dropped onto the wire fitted to the chassis, effectively slicing the wire clean in two between chassis and alternator. The symptoms were the same as there were no warning lights, just a badly charged battery that kept failing. Worse than this, l had to be tow started and the rope snapped as l engaged the clutch, with the metal end pinging back and hitting the front of the car. Result: one new battery and one resprayed front end.

The next time you change your alternator, get a single wire one, then you won't have that problem since you'll only have one wire to connect.
Having said that, it's necessary to make sure that the wire is more than finger tight.
Ask me and the auto club how I know.
Cheers
