Just wondering if any of the PH modellers have built any cool set scenes for their models...

I used to make diorama's of Warhammer and Warhammer 40k. I never really got into the games, but it was always cool to be able to tell a story with models. Sadly they've long been donated to various kids in the family and I have no photo's left of them frown

I also made a scene that had a spitfire bouncing a crashed ME109 with the pilot climbing out of the cockpit and a farmer pointing a shotgun at him. Poor sod hehe Based it on a painting I saw for sale in FlyPast magazine.

Some cool ones I found with a quick google:

cool

Anyone made a cool aircraft related one? I'd love to spend an age and recreate a scene in minute detail again. Might have a look for a few kits to fiddle with over christmas...

I have a Pro-Modeler 1:48 Ju52 (great looking kit, crispest mouldings I have ever seen) which is just asking to be made into a Where Eagles Dare diorama. Tracking down the right bus might be a bit difficult though.

This has to be my favourite diorama scene:

Lots more pics here http://www.dynamicdioramas.org/MODEL%20SOURCE/duel...
(Various other amazing dios on there too)

It's interesting that military always seems to be a firm favourite with modellers who enjoy the art of dioramas. I made a few as a young child but all have been lost over the years.

Once the kids and grown up and moved on I might consider doing some again...

My local IPMS club had a lovely 1/48 diorama of a downed Dornier 215.

I was knocked out when I found this page a few months ago - by far and away the best diorama I've ever seen! Normally I only do cars and bikes but this has inspired me to do the Revell U-boat one day.

Anyone care to let us mortals know HTF you get that effect? The water coming off the deck is just unbelievable.

If you read the Forum thread, the modeller tells you how it is done.

The good news is: Nothing massively exotic was used in it's creation.

The bad news is: That means it was 99% down to artistic talent and hard work that made it look so good!

The base of my dio is a mix of styro-foam and plaster. First of all I did not cut the bottom of the sub - it still is a solid hull submerged into (or surrounded by) lots of little pieces of Styro-foam glued together with white glue. I would say its pritty much the same method as model train layouts with mountains, valleys and othe relief...

When basic wave "layout" was set, everything was covered with layer of plaster. Actually I used just a cheap wall compound from closest Home hardware store and I spreaded it using a kitchen spoon :-)))))

After 24 hours everything was painted including the sub. Top of waves with lighter shades of blue/grey - bottom of the wave - darker shades. I used to work at sea on container carrier so I had to spend A LOT of time on the deck and on the bridge watching all kinds of waves and squalls :-)

When the paint job is done I put 3 layers of Realistic water by Woodland scenics.

The final step was to imitate all the water coming off the sub's hull. I used all sorts of crap - pieces of plastic cover for the cakes, stretched clear plastic sprue, clear rubber glue (dont remember the brand)...
There are quite a few extra parts for the Revell VIIc, including: brass or wooden deck, corrected drain holes, improved conning tower / wintergarten, torpedo loading winch, and cutaway interior.

That's exactly why I haven't gone there already - there's already far too much photoetch choice for the car model market and imagine drilling out all those drainage holes! smile

Good old Pollyfilla is a popular choice for seascapes I'm told.

That's quite cool. Needs to look a bit more grim and real for my tastes though... Sort of looks like it just got a polish after it had crashed if that makes sense...
